In the past, I used to message people like this to state that the coin is only damaged. I only received terrible messages back, so I stopped. I did think of sending them an honest offer of $0.04......
Thanks for posting. When I see something this crappy a part of me wonders if the seller is a scammer or really doesn't realize how crappy this crap is. In this one asking for an honest offer is probably telling on himself.
I find the wildest stuff on eBay. If it's not an outright fake, I just keep scrolling past. It seems you can't reason at all with these sellers.
I see postings for state quarters or ATB quarters on ebay going for 500-2000 dollars. They call them "rare" and "silver" (even when they clearly aren't). It feels so shady.. Sometimes, when I see a post for one of those going for $500 I'll message and either "beg" them to take $495 or offer them $750 instead of $500 to ensure that I get the coin and not someone else. I know it's savage but I can't help it... Those people are gross.
I saw an egyptian note the other day that was obviously not the year they were claiming it to be (1940). I started to message the seller to say - hey this is a nearly brand new note, not one from 1940, and explain why. But then I thought - it won't be well received even if it's an honest mistake and probably not worth my time, they'll just get defensive.
I've messaged dealers and been thanked for it. But those were honest dealers, names we know, and it was simple typos.
I'd contact them an, for example with the Bat Quarter, I'd let them know that I've got a few dozen of them just like the one they are selling on ebay, that I'll sell to them the one's I have for half the amount they are selling theirs for. If they really thought the Bat Quarter they have is really worth $840, they'd contact you back in a heartbeat to buy your Bat Quarters for $420 each and flip them on ebay for twice (the price they're selling theirs for). Point is, you won't get a response from them. Because they know their auction's nothing but a scam.
That goes both ways. I remember listing a batch of 40% halves on eBay BIN/BO close to melt, and getting an offer for something like a third of my asking price. I rejected the offer with a polite note. She messaged me back saying "I can buy these all day at (some ridiculous figure)". I messaged her back saying "Cool! Buy all you can, sell them to me at 2/3 my asking price, and we'll BOTH come out ahead!" She never replied.
A number of years ago, I saw an ebay auction for an 87' Pontiac Trans Am GTA with a "buy it now" for $40K. I contacted the seller about the car and he ranted on and on about how great the car is and how he could actually get more than $40K if he really wanted to. So I sent him pix of my own 87' Pontiac Trans Am GTA (which was, at that time, in 100% better shape & condition then his was because I had just finished the multi-year restoration project on it),and told him that I'd sell mine to him for only $25K. He could then turn around and sell it for $40K like he said he could easily sell the one he's got on ebay for. Sounds logical right? If you've got something that you believe that you're selling for a steal at $40K and know that you could sell it for a lot more if you really wanted to, buying the same exact make/model for almost half price would be something you could easily flip for profit. Never heard back from the guy. Obviously, he knew damn well his asking price was completely ridiculous.
It feels frustrating to think people will eventually get away with those things.. I've tried to report to ebay (like, when someone is selling a presidential dollar coin as real gold (circulated) for $10,000 when clearly it's just a regular coin. eBay does nothing.
ya unfortunately with the volume of sellers and listings on eBay these things often go on unresolved. Their feedback system is supposed to help but that's easily manipulated as well. Just have to be vigilant out there. I like to think that nobody that's willing to spend lots of money on a coin is going to fall for this type of thing, but then again I've seen alot of stupid things before.
Here's one I just came across that's fun..... https://www.ebay.com/itm/395069035516 Not only is the price insane, but the seller has 0 feedback, AND they list it as being certified by PCGS when it's clearly sitting unslabbed on a table. LOL I sure hope nobody falls for this one.
