Below is an 1878s dollar up for sale. The ad says 1878s Morgan dollars are harder to find toned on both sides of the coin. The seller wants $3,250 for the coin but is willing to take offers. How much do you think this coin is worth? When I go on the site https://www.monstertonedmorgans.com/ I'm not sure the coin is worth $3,250 but I'm also wondering out much the toning on both sides instead of just one side affects the price. The toning is pretty but I'm not sure it is worth $3,250.

if the seller wants $3,250 and there are more examples of these coins being worth this much then I would say it's worth that much

I've never understood why toning brings much of a premium. After all it is temporary.

I think the person purchasing this piece for the amount mentioned is going to be disappointed.

Too much toning for me. Makes it look artificial. JMO

There will always be someone asking crazy prices for coins like this.
I have yet to see a COLOR = $ chart on any price guide.

The thing is that this coin fairly descent on the obverse. Still has a terminal toned area of concern at 10-11 oclock.
The reverse has too much terminal toning to be worth the amount that is being asked.
I really don't think that it will sell for the asking price, or even a third.

Sure seems that way. I see many listings out there for toning adding four or five times the coins value.
There is one born every minute.

Just look at all the ones on this website: https://www.monstertonedmorgans.com/. When I want one, I'll do what they did, make my own.

To me, toning, no matter how "pretty" (always an eye-of-the-beholder thing) is nothing but environmental damage and lowers its appeal (i.e. value). Nor do I want the toning removed, again, damage. But to each his own. So the only question is, unless you are looking to turn a profit, how much value does it add to you personally?
