Hello, I was offered an Ivlia Domna denarius (RIC 536); however, I doubt its authenticity because I found a very similar one that looks 99% fake to me. Above the one found on the net, below the offered one. What do you think? Thanks in advance!
Firstly I would be interesed in finding out why you think that the comparison coin is 99% fake. Is the image from a fakes database or some other source? It is a type that is known to be faked and there are also modern odes known for the type but they are not these dies.
Based on the surface and its overall look make me feel that it may be fake. It could be authentic anyway, that is why I wrote that it looks 99% fake to me. And the die match made me doubtful.
I would evaluate the source as much as the image - there are fake sellers making / selling coins that are convincing from pictures but will be quickly recognized as fake in hand. What is the weight of the coin? What other coins is the seller selling? What country is the coin coming from? All useful to know before you buy.
They appear to be a die match. Based on the photos I don't believe either is fake. Check the weight for both coins. Keep in mind denarii weights can very greatly. Use ANA's OCRE database as a comparison https://numismatics.org/ocre/id/ric.4.ss.536_denarius
