I'm not entirely sure what a cud is, but is this an example of one? If not, what is it?

    Thanks

A cud would not affect the side edge of a coin in a negative way. This part of a coin is shaped by the collar. What you have is PSD, post strike damage

But.. a Buffalo would create a cud after chewing on plenty of grass! :wacky:

I understand what your trying to say. Not trying to totally disapprove you. But I am aware of and actually own what are called Collar Cuds or Rotating Collar Cuds. There is a reference to this subject on the Error-Ref website. I'm actually preparing to do a thread on the subject soon.
I want to share this webpage with you - http://www.error-ref.com/rotating-collar-cud/

The rotating collar error is very cool and I was not aware of it. Many thanks for the link! The collar, being the third die , can definitely be chipped or cracked and produce coins showing the coin metal in relief from the normal surface . The OP's coin seems to show incuse damage directly under what he was questioning was a cud. A damaged collar would not have done this.
Definitely will keep an eye out for your forthcoming thread !

Great. I will inform you when.
Here is an example of 2 that I own. You can see the movement of the Collar cud. First at the 8:30 position and then at the 9:00 position. I have plenty more of these! Almost 2 full NGC slab holder full
