I've seen several posts on coins that members have bought on Ancient Forvm. I've also browsed through the site, autions, shop & forums plus all the other educationals offered. It's a good website, I've used it to help attribute & ID some of my coins. But I've never actually bid or bought from there before. Yesterday I was browsing the auctions specifically Ancient Greek. I found a coin that I've had some interest in for a little while. From what I've read almost all known examples have come from a single hoard. The price tag has always just out of my reach at the times I've seen it for sale or at auction. This one isn't in the best condition, but the price was right. I thought it was a great opportunity to get my feet wet and try out the Forvm. I hope this doesn't jinx me. I normally wait until I have the coin in hand before I post. Pisidia, Selge. Æ12, 2.4g, 7h; 2nd-1st centuries BC Obv.: Laureate and bearded head of Herakles facing, lion-skin around neck; club to left. Rev.: Forepart of stag right, head left.
Nice coin @Smojo !!! I regret, I have none from Pisada. Forum has always been good for me: bidding and buying. Ship quick, packed well, good stuff. @Pishpash is right, they have 10% off from time to time, and I think I even accumulate some purchasing points too. Cool beans.
Have to research, likely an add to want list. The reverse is what drew me into it. I could see that as a nice addition.
Here's one I regret selling. And a provincial from Selge. Pisidia, Selge. Lucius Verus AE19 Obv: KAI BHROS / Barehead bust of Lucius Verus. Rev: SELGE WN / Winged thunderbolt and bow decorated w. animal heads.
Sweet coin @Smojo . I like the color of the patina on it. I don't like Forvm's forum, but their auctions and consignment shops are always full of cool coins. I've bought twice from them and have never been disappointed.
I've got bids in that end next week & week after. Gonna blow my budget, but 1 is a high want been searching for. Vespasian with my Pax on rev
Getting back on topic. Yes, these are rare, but less so after the hoard came out some years back. Still, rare. I have handled three of them (below), one in my collection. I have seen them in auctions starting about $60 (crazy low, and always snapped up by dealers who know the value of them), but at a high around $600, but the average somewhere about $250-350.
Yeah I've seen them in good condition such as yours never for $60 or i'd snagged it up in a heartbeat. Always in the $300 & up range for examples like yours. This one sold to me for $20 in this condition seemed to me a good pick. Maybe someday I'll be able to replace it with a nicer one. You have a nice set there Ken
