1976 mint set with damaged penny inside

hey guys, just purchased this mint s et today. the penny as you can see is really damaged by something but there are zero marks on the plastic. any ideas on a value for the? is there a name for this kind of error?

Interesting. Can we see the rev. of the coin? It's PMD. The damage happened after the coin was struck. You would think it would be call a mint error because it came from the mint like that, but it's not. Possibly from the lamination machine before the coin was sealed into the mylar. I have something similar I'll post.

Lots of force used to make that scratch and mush down the rim. Interesting to see.

 

Perhaps you can find someone willing to pay up for such a thing (as the old saying goes, "it takes all kinds") but I certainly wouldn't count on it having broad appeal. To most, and right or wrong, you have a sub par set that will be treated as such.

Quality control is so overrated at the US mint.

 

Makes me wonder if they have a "use it or lose it" sick time policy, and the QC guy ensures he uses it all.

The way I judge these things, if the package is damaged along with the coin it is packaging damage. Although possibly done at the mint (? and easily faked) I don't consider it special - but it is interesting. When the coin is damaged and the packaging is not, that's a real Mint error!

 

OP's set is a 1975 mint set, not a 1976 mint set, right?

 

I think my favourite mint sets with "damage" are the ones I own from the USSR that even have tell tale paw prints on the coins. Svetlana will live on with her little bit of DNA on the kopek.

 

Good catch! I think you're correct. It's actually a 1975 mint set. I think the 75 sets had the 1976 quarter, half and dollar in them.

 

Well, I'm guessing the perforation/sealing machine hit the edge of that mint coin. Although like @Insider said, something like this could easily be faked. The packaging was damaged in this case.

 

Most government entities or contractors do I will have to take a week or two later this year to make sure I don't loose any time.

Correct. There were no 1975 dated quarters, halves, or dollars - they were all minted with the '76 bicentennial designs.

As for the damaged coins in sets.... it happens. Did you buy these recently, or did you get them directly from the mint many years ago? If you bought them recently, return them (if you can).

If you bought them so-called "sight unseen" or "unopened" however.... well, let that be a lesson to everyone (a seller will not accept returns on these, since now that you have opened them you have changed their condition). I'll guarantee that they were not actually "unopened."

 

I bought them directly from the mint years ago. I only recently (within the past few years) started opening them and actually looking at them. For years, I had mint and proof sets coming to the house each year. I just throw them (unopened) in a big box in the bottom of the closet. I just never had the time or cared about opening them. They're only mint and proof sets, most worth less then what I paid for them!

 

I am really amazed that happened to your cent. I never saw such damage like that in a mint set. What willyou do about it? I suspect no dealer would pay premium for it, but still amazing.

 

I get your point about quality control. The use or lose thing depends on the system they are under, CSRS or FERS. Unused sick leave might get added to their retirement time. Bottom-line: They will use it all. Or they were on vacation when my error or PMD left the mint.

In any event, I believe it's common knowledge that quality control at the philly mint has been an on-going problem for years!
