Very nice set! I like the idea of combining a Dansco 7070 style type set with a box of 20-and being outside an album gives you more freedom to avoid certain items and add others. I am a fan of your one SMS (SP) coin-that 1998 Kennedy is cool and I think belongs in a type set. The Feuchtwanger and US Philippines 50 Centavos are fun additions as well. Both caught my eye. There are many other highlights too. I look forward to seeing the developments of this set as well as the photos of the special holders.
I don't know what charley saw but I suspect some might see this as a problem coin. Some of the dark spots hiding in the crevices could be an issue (not sure if it is just dirt, corrosion, or pvc). CAC seems to be more conservative lately and there is a chance they would not resticker that coin today (even if it kept the same cert number-although they would likely offer some compensation/buy offer if they felt it was no longer CAC-worthy).
I have a few slots missing and definitely would use different parameters. Thats a fun box of 83, I mean 100.
I think it was a reference to this: Box Position (3): 1854 Half Cent - Coronet, Braided Hair C-1 PCGS AU50 BROWN CAC [this coin will be re-slabbed soon]
Ah I see, I was thinking it was the reserved space for future installments to the set. Again @charley and I don't see eye to eye. SAME OLE' SAME OLD.
Do you see anything wrong with that 1854? I speculated in the post above yours that it might have an issue that CAC would now consider serious enough to not sticker it.
Nice to see you back at it. I’m on an extended hiatus myself from actively collecting. As between massive life changes and work i don’t have the time motivation and often the funds. But I still enjoyed e when we used to meet up for pizza beer and coin stuff
Here are more photos that may help show the full picture of the coin for further analysis. I welcome the comments / advice. @charley You may also see why I want this dang coin re-slabbed.
@geekpryde the scratches and clouding of the plastic are definitely a nuisance on that slab. Are they bad enough where you aren't able to polish it out? Here is one thread about that: https://www.cointalk.com/threads/coin-photography-scratched-slabs.356200/
Cool Doily holder Ike. I’m not a collector of the slabs myself, but I sit up and take notice when I see a Doily. Glad you included a Feuchtwanger.
I just saw that post as well. A Doily plus CAC Ike is definitely special in the holder world! I'm a fan.
Yeah, I have tried several times. I may want to try a new product, as I have not used the auto detailing stuff some people mention. I have two slabs were the scratches are legitimately DEEP. Almost like someone tried to damage the slab. I still laugh at PCGS, NGC, and CACG having "Scratch-resistant" holders. You even look at the slab, and it scratches itself. For whatever reason, the OLD OLD slabs, like mid 90's and early 2000 seem to hold up best over time to scratches.
New Purchase Today, Got another spot filled I have been wanting in 2023! DENOM TYPE START END STATUS NOTES 5C Jefferson Nickel 1938 - 1964 NEED ** Actively Looking For** Box Position (84): 1938-D Five Cent Pieces - Jefferson PCGS MS67+ Reason I liked this coin: I tend to love lightly toned MS67 Jefferson Nickels, they look so nice. There is something like a magical numeric grade barrier in Jeffersons, as soon as you get past MS65 they tend to get really flashy and pretty. Less than MS65 they tend to looks dull and flat a lot of times. I will be interesting to see how this one looks in hand, I am hoping some of that glow will show through on the reverse. This complements my other Jefferson Type, the war nickel that is also lightly toned and looks even better in hand than I think this TrueView shows. Box Position (29): 1945-D Five-Cent Piece - Jefferson Silver War PCGS MS67 FS
That's a nice looking toned Jefferson! I like including the first year of the type in your set. And at 67+ along with the color, you chose a super eye appealing example.
