I donated two items of my dad's to the Aerospace Museum in San Diego. I expected both would just be in the storage as neither is of much interest to the regular public that would be going to the Museum to see things. But I gave it with the hope that at some point, it might be of use to someone who is researching something or just as an extant relic of an age gone by. One was a large photo that was signed by a bunch of people and the other I believe was a report from the 1950s on some obscure aeronautical plane or drone, I don't remember, but for some reason it got saved by my dad and so 50 or 60 or so years on it was sent there instead of trashing it. If they have some way of cataloging it for use that's great. If they have just done a cursory catalog and stuck it in some box maybe not. As far as museums go, I think it's a hit and miss thing as to how they operate their systems and such. I hear tell of places that take the donations and pretty much just trash them for lack of space. So it always is a good idea to find out if you can what that organization has done before. And many times those museums don't even want stuff they don't already have. My choice for when my dad passed, since these were items that were really esoteric in interest would be to either keep them (nope, didn't want to), keep them with idea of putting on ebay and seeing if someone else wanted them (didn't even want to keep them to do this, sorry), trash them (it was a thought), or gift them to a museum that conceivably might have a use for them or want to keep them. I did that. And if they choose or chose to trash them, it's not my concern.
Road trip! I Wish! My twin and I could find you lol if I do not stop every second to take pics! lol! I love the wild life and that would be a wow! We or someone could get them to Rob, if he wanted to Auction in sets etc. We can all send $, an amount you prefer to send for postage to @Mountain Man. Hope this is not rude of me to volunteer @lordmarcovan. Of course in your time allowed Rob. Summer contests etc! Wishful thinking maybe, but anything to help our chief “Grasshopper”!
I have had very good luck with donations to museums and my visual items are on full display for eyes to see them. The paper and/or written items are properly indexed and are used for research. I agree that local regional or specific purpose are the best for donating items. I have 5 non-computer-generated letters thanking me personally for donating the items and how they will be used.
Yes.. I was even thinking a man that has an Article of @Mountain Man Living off the Grid in Montana… maybe locals can add to his wonderful story. Again, wishful thinking I guess!
@Mountain Man - what an incredible missed opportunity for the Boy/Girl Scouts. What's even more disheartening is that there seems to be waning interest in younger generations (or at least the people responsible for sparking interest within them). I'm lucky in that my youngest has taken an interest and even decided he would like to collect coins with various cats on them. He's got a bobcat, a puma, and a couple of lions already. My daughter isn't super into the idea of collecting, she's 14, but she does take some interest in looking at the various world coins I currently have (largely thanks to you). I'd hate to see Coin Collecting go the way Stamp Collecting has, I suppose that's not likely but there does seem to be a lack of public interest. Even at 42 I feel like I'm already the elder generation talking about things we did in the prehistoric era As for your collection - you've kindly sent me coins already and I would say others should have first shot, but aside from working on my birth year set I'm a large fan of Egypt and the mythology and history. If you need somewhere to send coins of that nature - I'd give them a good home (also happy to pay for postage/handling) That's a pretty cool idea, although geocaches are often subjected to alot of moisture. I have a half dozen or so and as well as I waterproofed them I've had to hike out and replace them from time to time. Also sounds like Mountain man would need to appoint someone to place them for him. Does give me some ideas though, I haven't done much geocaching for a few years.
Suprise, surprise. I too am/was a Geocacher, and my best friends here in Helena are the founding members of the local club. I could easily give them some of my "packets" of coins to share. Good idea guys. Thanks. Maybe some coins from Egypt might find there way to you 81.
