I've recently become a coin collector, and without much knowledge of the subject, I was wondering if anyone knows if any of the wheat pennies I possess are rare? image.jpg

Sorry to burst your bubble, but none of them are rare.

(Well, technically speaking, there are no rare wheat pennies in the series, but thanks to collector demand some of them are very valuable.)

But welcome to CT! There are plenty of Lincoln collectors here. BadThad, the inventor of Verdicare, is one of them.

Did you bother to read the OP's post? This person is new to the hobby, and simply asked if any of the coins are rare; they didn't say nor remotely imply that they are rare, so you're not "bursting" anyone's "bubble".

True - I refer to the 1969-S Doubled Die Obverse as the only RARE
Lincoln cent! OP - none of your wheat cents are rare.

Welcome to CT. I'd venture to say the majority of collectors started with cents. Needless to say I have little sense left according to my wife. Enjoy the hobby

Not rare, but still fun to own, and keep collecting because you should eventually own some rare ones.

The only "Rare" wheat cent's are the bronze '43's and steel '44's.

@London , the wheat pennies that you should keep an eye out for are usually anything from 1909-15 w a mintmark, and 1931-33 w a mintmark, they can command premiums

Welcome to CT! While you don't have anything particularly valuable there, you do have some of the pre-30's coins....which is a GOOD start!

I would say the 1909-S VDB and 1914-D Lincoln cents are rare. If you are a Lincoln collector and have those 2 coins, we shall bow to you. Rare is a relative term

I believe the 1958 DDO is almost as rare with only 2-3 known to exist.

Start with a "Red Book" It's a must. Read it from cover to cover, and memorize the information, Even myself I have to return to the book because I have forgotten a lot of information at my age of 73. But good luck looking for any type of U.S. coin. :angelic:

Except for the values given in it. You can ignore those.

As you have seen, the word "rare" can have a lot of different interpretations. Across all of numismatics you will find coins that have only one or two examples. Lincoln cents were generally abundant, so rareness is relative. You can have mistakes or errors that are truly rare. Within one year you may find that the coin is rare in some grades, or that proofs are rare.

Within your group, you have interesting attractive coins. I like the clarity of the dates and I like the bit of luster on the 1952-D. I like that the bust of Lincoln is clear with good relief.

So while they may not be scarce or hard to find, they are certainly worth having. It's a good start.
