We have a heavy 17 gram thick old coin( or we believe it to be a coin) about the size of a nickel as is shown in the picture. One side looks to have plain striations and the other has a deep impression of we don’t know what. We are unable to find anything online like it. The closest we can guess is maybe it’s a type of stater, we need more help… Also, we think it has gold in it or covering it. When using a magnet, there is a slight pull, but the magnet won’t pick it up.
Thank you for the reply. We are learning how to identify coins. How can we tell that it is a coin die?
Welcome to Coin Talk MAW. As mentioned above, I doubt it is a coin of any type, as even very old coins had more details on them. The size and appearance of it, makes me wonder if it is a silver slug that was stamped for identification, but it would be difficult to track down. You might look under exonumia and maybe post it under Ancient forum to see if anyone there might be familiar with it. You can take it to your local coin shop, or jeweler to find out the metal composition. Get weight, diameter, and thickness for further research. Half of the fun in coin collection, is running across something like this and becoming a detective. Good luck and let us know what you find out.
As I said, it looks like a crude attempt to make a die. check out the below video starting around 2:00
