Is This a 1796 or 1798 Draped Bust Large Cent?

    I had a question for you all. This Draped Bust Large Cent was in a group of coins that I acquired. I can't determine for certain whether it is a 1796 or 1798. Could you all please help me determine which date it is? Thank you!

    I’m not that good at Large cents despite have a number of them but that sure looks like an 8 to me.

    It has the reverse of 1794, so it has to be a 1796.
    I attributed it to S-102. It is an R-4 coin.
    Very nice find!

    As I said I have done but don’t collect them but when zI look at the date on the OP’s coin, that last digit looks like an 8 to me as the top portion looks totally round.

    Here is a photo of a confirmed S-102 beside the OP's coin. If you compare the details you will see that they are all the same. One of the defining details for this variety is that the fraction bar is fused with the 1. That detail is unique to this variety, thus confirming it. :)

    Thanks. I probably could have worded it better, but at least I got my point across. I guess I should have paid more attention in English class! :hilarious:
