Just wondering if any of you have found a 500$ note or higher from a bank.
(Ya know, your friendly bank teller calls you and tells you what they have)

Im wondering because I'm very interested in acquiring a 500$ or 1,000$ note. However, Im not ready to spend hundreds, if not thousands over face value - which is why I'd like to get one from the bank :)

from this forum i've heard many stories of other people brining in old coins and notes (and then the bank teller tells the forum member), but I wanted to know if that applied to high denomination bills?

    thanks :thumb:

I've been asking, but somehow I get the impression that I would not get first crack at it. I do my best to make sure the tellers know that I don't just turn around and sell for a profit what I find from circulation. With the exception of the Washington Error Coins, I have not sold anything that I pulled out of circulation. With the Washington dollars, there were just too many for me to keep all to myself. I kept the best for myself, gave some to family and sold the rest.

Your chances of finding any note above the $100 is pretty slim.
Government regulations. I believe banks need to report anything higher than $100 note to the Feds.

You can thank the illegal drug trade for that. Was a lot easier to carry around a $100,000 or so in the higher denominations. Hence we don't make them anymore.

I've heard that casinos run into them on occasion. Now THAT"S a gambling habit but like I said I HIGHLY doubt you'll ever find one at a bank.

Pay the smallest premium that you can. They'll only go up in value.

They print $1000 bill in Canada until 1980ths. They only used for short time and Bank withdraw out of use.

i agree with clembo. any higher US notes above $100 are likely never to be found in circulation. It is sad, but true

I figured my chances were slim, I was just wondering if it was possible, or anyone had experience with it.

the only expeirience i can think of is a co-worker of mine brought a 1,000 dollar note to the bank to deposit it a few decades ago. the bank teller said it was fake and alerted the manager. the manager accepted it. This co-worker of mine is kicking himself in the buttocks now. that note is worth upwards of $13,000 in Au condition!

A few decades ago (and more recently) people often just deposited these at the bank at face value. There wasn't a premium like there is now. It's really only within the last < 10 years that there has been, and less than that where there's been some big jumps.

I think I have a $500, and four $1,000 notes, one of which would fetch around $1,300 (due to condition) which is reasonable IMHO. It's not for sale (and I wouldn't post it in this forum if it was :D), but I may put it up for auction in a few months.

I wish my bank teller would hold a $5K or $10K note for me, but in reality you're not going to find a $500 or $1,000 there either.

Someone in the bank is going to realize its worth more than face and buy it themselves even if one comes in so it isnt going to go out for face anyway.

Yeah the bank manager probably bought that $1000 bill from the bank for himself. I do love the way people not in the know are so ready to scream fake anytime its a coin or a bill that they have never seen before.
