A question for the nickel nuts!

How do ya'll like to look up coins on a web site---such as my site will hopefuly have a variety listing...I was thinking of something like coinfacts.com http://www.coinfacts.com/nickels/jefferson_nickels/jefferson_nickels.html

And then when you click on the date the next page would show maybe a little write up, if needed, with some info about the strike, etc...and then a listing of the RPM's OMM's...etc.
Or do you rather a listing of all of the RPM's on one long page...or such a thing as....a page for all of the varieties in the 30's...and another page for the 40's?

I know this is alot of questions---but what I want my site to be is this...a site that even a beginner can move around in and find the info that he/she needs. I don't want it to be a site just for the experts...and I don't want one that is so full of stuff that you can't find your way around.

I've always thought that CoinFacts was easy to navigate.
Not going to be a simple task, no matter which direction you choose.
    I don't envy you. LOL

    Speedy,

The site looks really nice so far. The part I hate about coin facts is that you have no idea which years have photos associated with them. It would be really nice to have a camera next to each listing that has pictures available. For someone just learning, photos realllllly help. Any coin that has an error associated with it should be shown as an example of what to look for.

As an example - I picked up a roll of 39 nickels sealed with tape and the tape had become brittle with age. It was really hard to figure out what was meant by 38 reverse or 40 reverse. With the doubling I at least knew what it would look like. Unfortunately the nickels are in fine with a few very fine but no steps really visible on any. (no big surprise) No doubling on any.

Beyond that, I like the layout and go there often.

Separate by decade if you think it will be easier to navigate but always leave that navigation available from any page or at least sub-group page.

Look forward to the continued work. I will be happy to comment (if requested) on any design decisions. I have a history in Marketing of software. Spent a number of years looking at screen designs and usability.

    Good luck...

Now this strikes my fancy! I've been waiting on a delivery of Littleton folders so I can start sorting out my Jefferson Nickels... I find them immensely intriguing!

And I can't wait to start buying rolls from the bank for searching. :eat:

That would be great! Send them on!

Photos will be coming slowly! But when they do I'll be sure to somehow show what dates have photos.

Speedy, If you could do something like http://www.coppercoins.com/diesearch.php would be nice. I think they have the best and easiest site for looking up varieties on Cents I have seen. Just a Though.
By the way Love what you got going so far.

I never have seen this site. It would be fantastic to have something simular for the Jeffersons! Speedy has his work cut out. I admire you for this project Speedy but I don't think I envy you. LOL
Seems the work is ever increasing before it really gets started. I think you need to have a link for donations if you don't already!

Thanks Ed! I've booked marked that page and will see what I can do. I also like the layout that he has designed there. I can't say much for the guy that owns the site though...I've tried to contact him many times for many differnt reasons and never even got an email back. Maybe what I could do is have the best of both sites---the main nickel page be like CoinFacts...and then when you click on a date it would show up like that site.

    Nickelman!
Thanks! The work is ever increasing--and I don't guess I'll ever have a site that is halfway done. But my only hope is that I can help a young (or old) collector in hunting down the varieties.
As for the link---I don't plan to do that kind of thing. I have toyed with the idea of later on down the road...in a year or two...having a place for ad's on the pages...but I'm not sure about that either.

Just to let ya'll know that already the new site has gotten over 3k hits! That is pretty good for a website that isn't even done yet!
I'm working on some of the suggestions that ya'll have made---and hope to get some more of the site done in the next few weeks.

    Speedy,

I think you'll find this to be an exciting adventure! I don't think JT fully appreciated the value (monetary or numismatic) of having this site available to collectors. The possiblilities are endless and with the right publicity and content I think you'll get your nickels worth out of it in just a short time. May I say thank you for bringing nickels back to the forefront, I wish you all the best in your quest I hope you enjoy it and it brings you joy and prosperity!

I've been working on cleaning up the area alittle and hopefuly have made it easier. Please note that when you click on Jefferson Nickels that then the meun drops down and you see the rest of the pages. That is so if I do ever get the time to make some pages for Buff's and V's and Sheild nickels it will be easy to get right to the part you want.

Hopefuly the next thing I get done will be part of the variety listing. For that I'm going to have a page for each date/mintmark. On that page will be a listing, with photos (as I can get them), and comments on each variety! I'm going to start out with RPM's and well known varieties.
Along with that I'm also going to make a page for Errors, and show a photo of each "type" of error! Such as:
Clip, Broadstruck, Double Struck, Matted Pair, Off Center, and so on. I think that will be another neat page with info for the beginner!

On your site you list the 1964 as not having any mint mark, it did have a mint mark it was the 1965, 66, and 67 that it did not have a mint mark on the Jefferson nickel hope this helps.

I know you still have a lot to do, Speedy, and the job may never be 100% complete, but I just wanted to say that so far, I really like what I see.
    Continued success, my friend.
