Hi all, enjoying all your great coins posts. Picking up a few here, under your influence. I really love these ancients now. This coin is interesting. it was sand encrusted, and I just took a gamble after I saw parts of the camp gate on the reverse.. I cleaned it up some. Can any of you pros give me an attribution? 19mm,3.35 grams? Thanks in advance. Here's a couple pics to check out. I love this coin... constantinusobv2.jpg constantinusrev.jpg

It looks like a very nice coin! Welcome to the Dark Side!

Since you know the ruler I would like to challenge you to attribute it yourself! It's not very hard, trust me, because even I can do it! Go to www.wildwinds.com and go to the Roman tab, find the ruler and go from there. Your coin has a nice clear legend so it won't be hard. If you don't already have them, a scale and calipers are nice to have.

I second JWT's recommendation but also suggest looking for it in Dane/Helvetica's fantastic spreadsheet for campgates. You'll see just how extensive the issue was and you'll also get a better idea of how RIC is organized.

The spreadsheet link is on this webpage:

    Scroll to the "campgates" spreadsheet.

Thanks for the feedback . Great coins jwt. Will do as you coin people say. I been trying to use ebay to attribute it. Lol got pretty close. This coin was completely encrusted with deep hard sand. From Bahrain. thanks, I,m off and running to attribute...:D

Also, nice job cleaning it up without damaging it! There's nothing more annoying to me than a coin with decent details that's scratched up by hasty cleaning.

I'll give you a hint on attribution. Letters 3 and 4 of the mint mark tell you the mint.

Patience my man. The key to success... and a bent tip scalpel, using verdicare . And a light touch scraping. And 2hours under an adjustable magnifier...my back was hurting, but ....:):D

It's a different hobby altogether from collecting. I tried my hand at some cleaning and decided it wasn't my cup of tea. I'll cure coins of BD, but I won't clean them from scratch. More power to you!

Ya I'm the same way. I couldn't do it! I would rather pay a little more and not have to do it!

Cleaning is a great intro to the hobby. Attributing teaches you loads. Once you hold a very nice coin, the urge to clean sort of fades.

@old49er you did do a fine clean job. I did one a few weeks ago just to learn from it. Under the crud was a very low grade maximinus II. The reverse of Jupiter was the only decent part of the coin. Not sure if I will try another but if I do I will be sure it's a better quality before I attempt it.
