I have a couple of toned commems that I would like to get opinions on. Are they keepers or should I throw them back and wait for other fish in the sea to bite? For each coin, would the effect on value be positive, negative or neutral? Your honest feedback is appreciated! Coin A Coin B
Coin A probably neutral. The reverse pretty meh. Coin B slight positive with a bit of that circ cameo look. Obviously both coins will lose the blast white buying base
Personally, I don't care for the toning on any of them, and most "toner aficionados" would probably not pay a premium for such toning. Chris
(If) I was more into toners, I would be more inclined to go with a rainbow effect, blues, greens, etc. The Grant looks like a copper coin and the Stone Mt. russet obscures the finer details of the coin. I've never been into any kind of brown toning, but that's just me.
I like them both (I'm jaded as an commem lover ) but would not pay a premium for either piece. Others might, though......... Oh.........I'd keep 'em.
Stone mountain is negative. Way too distracting and obscuring. The Grant is nice for a dark toner but it's a DARK TONER so the best is neutral
I like the second one a lot. I think it brings out all the nice features in the coin. The first coin, I view the toning as a distraction. That said, seems toning is pretty much a subjective attribute. Myself, I love well toned coins. I have an Engelhard Prospector bullion coin that toned in that way, that I will keep even if it would sell for a premium.
Coin A is a no go for me on the toning. Coin B has too much wear for my taste. Pass on both. I collect commem halves also.
The Stone Mountain looks like "terminal" toning to me. I'd worry that it might progress further, which could make the coin ineligible for even its current MS65...?
I'm not big on those kind of toned colors. They make it hard for me to see the details especially when I don't have the coin in hand. I'd vote negative, but that's my opinion for what it's worth.
Not a fan of coin A tone coin B tone is something that I could live with. It looks like a natural worn coin that aged . But will admit nothing that would turn my head walking a show looking for that specimen .
Coin A. I like the obverse, the toning kind of lends itself to the thought of a couple of generals on a battlefield , one of them soon to die, having a discussion on tactics after a day's fighting with more to come...I don't really like the reverse. Coin B. A little dark, but I kinda like the look of it, I wouldn't mind having it...not an expensive coin in a little higher grade so I wouldn't choose it. I don't think the toning on either will drive a premium...seems the fatty holders can do nice things to Morgans but some other series don't fare so well.
I would say neutral on both coins (taking into consideration the grade...i.e. if the Grant was that dark in an MS grade, I would say it was a negative). I also slightly prefer the Stone Mountain over the Grant.
The OP photos were in natural sunlight. Here are photos I just took using a flash that show the reverse a bit better. I think you are on to something as the reverse is dripping with luster in hand However, the obverse is what it is...
