Ya I didn't mean to suggest I thought you could buy these "made for ebay lots" and expect to find something special. I was just more interested in, do you at least get what you pay for, or somewhere close. I would never do that to look for something specific or hope to find that rare morgan dollar in MS condition or something. Just, the fun aspect of not knowing exactly what you get is intriguing to me. But only if I'm not paying double or triple the value of what's in it. Also - side note, I used to like goldschlager in my younger days. Now, not as much.
I'm also interested in hearing from people who bought "made for ebay lots". They look "scam-my" to me so I avoid them, but I'd like to hear someone's actual experience. In the lots I DO buy (large groups where maybe the sellers miss something, or maybe the group is so large that buyers can miss a cool coin unless they really zoom in on the pics) I have always gotten my money's worth, but I also cut off bidding at 2/3 of what it looks like its worth.
Intentionally underestimating a lot's value is a good strategy when you're bidding. Especially if you don't get too upset when you're outbid.
I need to rethink my opinion on these unsearched lots…… Some years back I helped a friend liquidate his late father’s collection. One item in his collection was a huge glass jar filled to the top with wheats. It was so heavy that I moved it with a hand truck. My dealer buddy purchased the jar based on weight and I watched him weigh out small bags to market. I watched him do it and they were truly “unsearched” bags of wheats…. So yeah, I suppose there are truly unsearched lots out there.
