Anybody know if this mint is still in business? I'm in hawaii now and can't find any recent info on it. I saw the grand opening was like in 1996 or 1997 and supposed to be at king and kalakaua but I went today and saw nothing. Would appreciate any info. Thank You!
the royal mint in operation when the US invaded it is no longer in operation. and there is NO US mint in hawaii. I am not sure to what you might be thinking might be there .... it might be a medalian company like the franklin mint or the 'national mint' ... maybe?
The Royal Hawaiian Mint was a private mint, in operation from 1995 until the owner sold it to start his Liberty Dollar balloney. Google finds no record of the new owners ever striking anything.
I thought I'd look it up, I was curious..... From 1995 to 1997 they were at King and Kalakaua, in 1997 they moved to the International Market Place. The mintmaster, Bernard von NotHaus, retired in 1998 ( launch the Liberty Dollar program) and leased the RHM to Polynesian Resources Inc. There wasn't much activity coming out of the RHM for the next 5 years. The RHM is now leased by Bud Gregory and his wife, Jackie, except the RHM products aren't produced in Hawaii anymore, they are being produced by the Sunshine Mint in Coeur d'Alene, Idaho. The mailing address for the Royal Hawaiian Mint is 225 N. Stockwell Road, Evansville. IN. Bernard von NotHaus is mintmaster again, and is selling the 'Hawaii Dala', basically the 'Liberty Dollar' target-marketed toward Hawaiian merchants and tourists. http://www.hawaiidala.com/
so its a local mint producing an alternative currency? i would certianly LOVE to get some items from the official hawaiian mint from a couple centuries ago :thumb:
I'd love to have a fun discussion about this, but I don't want to take the thread OT...BUT...its quite a humorous coincidence that "alternative currency" and Bernard von NotHaus are mentioned in the same thread!
They are made by a private mint, not sure which one. But they are entirely different in that they are issued by merchants, store owners on Maui. The reason for their issuance is also different, it is to promote additional business for them. The Maui dollars are correctly called "good for" tokens, they are given for free by the merchants to their patrons in small numers or they can be purchased in larger numbers by one person and then given to another person as a gift - to be used much like a gift certificate since they can only be spent at those specific stores.
Actually, there never was an official Hawaiian mint. All of the Royal Hawaiian coins were made at the US mint.
currency in use in Hawaii prior to the US takeover, were minted at the US mints? Hawaii was around LONG before the US occupation and subsequent forced treaty signing! I am not sure, i have never looked into it. So i am merely askign again to be sure.... All the Hawaiian coins prior to the island chanin becoeming US state were minted/printed at a US mint? Or was your comment meant to mean after it became a state?
He is correct, there never has been an official mint on Hawaii. The Royal Hawaiian coins he refers to are these - Hawaiian Coins
