Hello, I received these coins from my grandfather some time ago among others. These are the ones I have yet to identify. I have tried searching on eBay and other websites, but have yet to find a definitive answer on what they are and how much they are worth/rarity. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks Note: Unfortunately the camera has washed most of the color out, but the coins are of a bright gold color.
1907 is a double eagle arabic numerals. 361,667 were minted. I do not clam to grade coins well...but red book retail would be $700-$800.00. 1875 is another double eagle... red book $750-800.00. 1911 is an eagle...maybe $450.00 retail 1904 is a half eagle...maybe $200 retail. Those are best guesses on what I can see.
The Double Eagle is the nickname for the U.S. gold $20 coin. The Eagle is the $10 coin,& the 1/2 Eagle is the $5 coin. There is also a 1/4 Eagle as well, which is the gold $2.50 coin, but obviously, there isn't one depicted here. Aidan.
Wow I'm shocked with the number of replies. Thank you again for the fast responses. Do you think it would be good to have these coins professionally graded? Say If I were to later trade them or sell them? Any idea on the companies best known for doing that?(Grading) Thank You.
Epic18s,do not submit them to Star Grading Service (SGS),as they are a bunch of self-slabbers who are the subject of a lot of complaints. Some U.S. collectors use either PCGS or ANACS as their grading services. Aidan.
I would probably send them to ANACS, as you do not have to be a member to submit. Plus, if they happened to have been cleaned in the past, ANACS will still put them in a holder and note on the holder that they were cleaned. The other grading companies will simply send the coin back if it were cleaned without grading it.
Shortgapbob has an excellent viewpoint. Especially considering that you are a novice collector and this would still show that the coins are genuine. Good luck.
Lucky for me there is a coin convention this weekend at the Baltimore Convention Center. I will have time to browse and find out about the different grading processes. Thanks for the help.
can I ask the members here why the gold looks to have lost its color? or is that just the camera work?
Is there anything special about this coin because it was minted in San Fransisco? It's the camera work. The coins look allot better in person. The camera washed the color out. I just wanted to make sure I got the best detail to help identify them.
epic18s: There is no difference in listed value for a Philly vs a San Francisco, however, they just wanted them to know what the mint mark was on the coin.
