And why not state again how much I love your luster animations. Please tell me this one's MS, or else I'm going to be even more depressed about my grading ability...
This SLQ was bought raw from an eBay seller. I put it in my notes as MS65. However, I admit that grading this series completely confounds me. I look at photos that look terrific and they are MS62. I see others that look crummy and they are MS64 or 65. I suspect the graders have a dartboard where they can randomly call up the grade and Cleaned, or AU, or Details. I might trust the opinion of @Hambone1946 (considering the coins he shows above), but not my own.
The SLQs are my favorite US coin. I remember in the mid 1960s (feeling old when I say that) my mom would send me to the Piggly Wiggly for a few items. The cashiers there knew I was fascinated be old coins so they would save them for me. Lots of Indian Heads and Buffalos with a few Mercury dimes. Then one day they had a greatly worn SLQ and I was hooked. About 20 years ago I started building a PCGS set in AU. It was almost complete then I got sidetracked by ancients. This thread has rekindled my interest. @Hambone 1946 - great collection!
I meant to pick up more SLQs some years ago, but it just didn't happen. They are perhaps one of the most amazing designs ever put out by the US Mint. Had I lived during their circulation, I might have had trouble spending them, but a quarter went quite a long ways in the 1920s. In any case, I only have a single humble specimen in my pile:
RonSanderson; Your coin should go at least 64FH and possibly 65FH. Nice coin. Here is the best struck 18-S I have ever seen and PCGS says Au details cleaned. Really? And here is the best struck Type 2 SLQ I have ever seen. All the details are there and it's a key date too.
Thank you - an independent opinion is really appreciated. This 1924 was also graded as Cleaned. I look at the surfaces under high magnification and all I see is undisturbed; there is all kinds of very fine structure and no sign of die wear. I can’t see any signs of anything ever having touched the coin at all. Puzzling.
Some real beauties posted here. I'm not posting any of mine, I have around a dozen. NOT.ONE.HAS.A. DATE. No Type ones either, at least the 3 obverse stars let me sleep at night. My brother I refer to these as "the flying buzzard".
I have 7 more to complete a set 1916 1918 (why is this hard to find in a dent grade?) 1918/17 1919 (need to upgrade) 1920S (hard to find in XF+) 1927 (need to upgrade) 1929 (need to upgrade)
