Larger copper British halfpennies from the mid to later 1840s certainly don’t gather much attention or love - and I mean specifically the era of 1843 through 1848. In high grades the 1845 is rather a killer, and in nicer uncirculated grades would at auction likely reach at least $5k and likely even that in pounds. But others in this series like the 1844 or 1846 are also really tough to come by in higher uncirculated levels. IMHO these are beautifully designed with well executed renditions of both Victoria and Britannia. I recently got this 1844 halfpenny at Heritage, graded MS65 and the nicest I have seen: Quite a few coins were on sale with some very nice Vicky copper Pennie’s (eg. 1849and 1856). Many coins went for larger amounts, but in the later halfpenny series also got an undergraded 1869 halfpenny quite cheaply as prospective buyers were likely held back by the slab grade (MS62).
That's lovely. I like Victorias, particularly Youngheads, and I've always had a thing for the year 1844.
