Hello everyone! Monday again! Today I'm doing the old "Monument Monday" theme. Please post a coin depicting a US Monument.... Okay, I'll go first. The Monticello building:
2005 Marine Corps 230th Anniversary Proof Silver Dollar Marines raising the American Flag over Iwo Jima This memorial shows the six Marines who raised the second and largest of two U.S. flags that were both raised atop Mount Suribachi located at the south end of Iwo Jima, on February 23, 1945. It is located in Arlington County, Virginia near the Ord-Weitzel Gate to Arlington National Cemetery. The memorial was dedicated in 1954 to all Marines who have given their lives in defense of the United States since 1775. The first flag flown over the mountain was regarded to be too small to be seen by all the American troops on the other side of it where most of the fighting would take place, so it was replaced by a larger flag. The flag-raising also was recorded by Marine Sergeant Bill Genaust, a combat motion picture cameraman.
Thanks for showing me your coins/medals. My wife and I went to visit a friend of ours and stopped by the Vietnam Veterans Memorial. We lost a friend over there in 1969. The family had memorial gathering in Utah for Him. I couldn't go, so my wife went and brought back some pictures. She now has about 10 "penpals" in Salt Lake City now. We have a friend that was an Army Chaplain during the Vietnam Conflict. He made 3 tours. He was there as well. Seeing these coins, It puts me back some. Again, thanks for your pictures. Oh yeah, I made a request to a veteran's organization, to get a copy of information about his service. It took them over 3 months to get them. There must be almost 30 DD214s. I haven't had a chance to take the time to organize them and document the details.
This is the closest I could get to showing the amazing color of these cents. They look a lot more colorful in person.
