I'd submit it to Rick Snow at Eagle Eye Rare Coins (www.indiancent.com) for his opinion. If he believes the remaining mint luster is authentic it is likely that the grading companies will accept his expert opinion, and he has his own "Photo Seal/CAC) that is recognized as more dependable than any of the grading companies by most Indian Head Cent collectors. If Rick believes the toning is natural it is possible PCGS will reverse their grading and re-slab it at no charge. It is worth a try. Rick's fees are much less than a grading company. Contact Rick, and arrange to meet him at the ANA. I suspect he will be there.

I just checked the (www.Fly-inclub.org) website and saw that Rick Snow will actually be presenting a new grading system at the ANA, so this is an excellent opportunity for you to resolve the question with your coin. And, please let this forum know what Rick says. Incidentally, for collectors of Flying Eagle and Indian Head Cents, the Fly-in Club has some excellent resources including 25 years of their journal "Longacres Ledger" and a forum that could use some new blood.

johnmatt - I agree this coin has been graded unfairly. Having said that, it's important to consider what Idhair mentioned above. It is a gorgeous example. I've been searching for this particular date in G - VG grade, for a long time so I know you have invested good money in this coin. The coloring doesn't throw up any red flags for me. I've seen many with similar coloring. I don't see it as a "maybe", or a "could be." It appears to be solidly RB and looks more like a "should be", to me. I hope you end up with a no details, mint state grade, but either way, congratulations on adding a really amazing IHC to your collection. Jack

I like the suggestion to sent it to snow.

Now, let me split hairs here. Actually, the coin is correctly graded as Mint State. The problem is the color. Now this coin has been sent in to Heritage and if they could not get it straight graded, it is going to be tough for anyone else to.

As I wrote earlier, there is NOTHING ORIGINAL about the pink color on the "N." None of us have the luxury of seeing it "in hand." Perhaps the coin is 100% natural yet the TPGS did not wish to take on the liability of (what would be) such an expensive high grade coin. IMHO, that coin can be toned down just a pinch by those who have knowledge of the method and still rate the RB designation in a straight graded slab. Baring this, you have a rare and wonderful coin that one day WILL BE straight graded.

PS I've been told o_O;) that the method I referred to above has been long known by many copper collectors as it has been published for anyone to find.

"I'm not sure but the color ,lack of more than one diamond on the ribbon . When you're talking a 1877 in Au. plus range you're talking some money. TPG'S are not going to sign off on a maybe or a could be."

Sometimes the diamonds aren't complete due to strike, not to wear. That said, there's just a little something "off" about the color and surfaces, especially on the obv. And it's difficult to tell from images as ldhair has inferred. Then again, the slabbing outfits DO slab coins that haven't been cleaned as cleaned. The same can be said for "questionable color."

I hope folks will checkout the Fly-in Club. Great group. The Ledgers hold a great deal of information. There is a meeting at the January Fun Show each year.
The forum there is really slow. It used to be really active but there are just too many forums for folks to post everywhere.

I may have found the reason this coin has been detailed.

It has to do with a pricing and grading adjustment (not yet confirmed) going on at the TPGS's:

Unattributed (I :blackeye::bucktooth: forgot to get his handle) quote from CU:

"Go back to Rick's coin world article. Didn't TPG send you a signal to crack-out/re-submit all properly graded AU 1877 cents? You should receive a much higher grade(s) on them and thus they will be priced/sold at $4500, except the grade isn't AU-50 anymore. If so, when all PS AU-50 1877 cents are upgraded to much higher grades, what are you going to do? What does $4500 price guide in your pink list stand for at that time? Should we reset grading standards after all "corrected graded based on 80s to early 90s standards" are upgraded? [IMG][IMG][IMG]"

Rick Snow, an Indian cent dealer has been advocating stricter standards and "stickers" cents that meet the criteria of the old days. He has written several articles on this and is giving a presentation on a grading proposal at this years ANA Convention. This is being discussed on Collectors Universe where a dumb poster :facepalm::shame: (thinking the convention was over) brought up the topic.

We all know grading standards have loosened far away from those we learned decades ago. It would be nice and solve a lot of differences if standards could be tightened enough to bring dealers/collectors/TPGS together.

I never did understand all of this. When Rick first posted the article on CU it went poof before I got to read it. Was it the same article that Rick had already printed in the Longacre's Ledger? Maybe it was a bit different and CU did not want it posted on their site. I don't know but hope to ask him at the next Fun Show.

I have a copy (somewhere) of an original article he wrote - probably in the Ledger. There is a post on CU of his latest.
