I was walking by and checked it, not using it. The tray was overflowing and as I scooped, more coins were sliding down. The reject slot was backed up probably 4 or 5 inches up into the machine. I filled my pocket then just scooped into my grocery bag. It took a while. Pretty unbelievable. There were people staring of course as I was in my knees throwing fistfuls of change into a bag.
Went to Vegas. Stopped in a grocery store to get some donuts. Saw a Coinstar...$8.12, a Canadian dime and nickel and a Thai coin. Cha-ching
Ha! LOL. I too have an "old nickel retirement centre" at my home, but didn't know it had a name. thanks for pointing that out.
I miss them - A TON... back in the day I would go to Laughlin and/or Vegas specifically to play the half dollar machines... many times I wouldn't even play them... I would just keep cashing out the machines, pulling the silver coins, turning the change in, and then move on to the next machine... and hit repeat...
That made me laugh ... many years ago as a young lad I worked uniformed security in a large casino in Reno. We used to call you folks "Silver Miners". The casino used to make us throw you out (we actually would give you a voucher for a free meal at a neighboring casino and make you their problem). Basically you weren't making money for the house so they had no need for you to take up a seat ... Of course back then I had no interest in coin collecting ... so I didn't know any better.
One dime and one nickel in a coinstar. Then there was two dimes, a nickel, and a cent in the self checkout change tray. Later in the day, one dime and four cents in the change tray at Subway. One was a '56 wheat.
Two dimes and a cent in the reject at the self check out of the grocery store. A Canadian dime in the coinstar of the same store.
Well, 2 clad Quarters including a North Dakota 1 nickel 3 Lincolns Memorial 1 Canadian 1974 Cent 58 cents
Have been looking in coinstar a for two years now and just got my first score. Only two wheat pennies. But you'd be surprised by just how many people don't care about their change. Working at a pharmacy the people in the drive through just purposely leave it in the basket cause they don't feel like picking out the coins. They literally have to sign a paper that's also in the basket and sign through coins but don't take them.
