I have recieved a half dollar in change at the ticket booth for a washington state ferry within the last two years. Also, many years ago, I would get $2 bills in change at stevens pass ski area.
In 2000. I received my change in $2 bills from a souvenir shop in St. Augustine Fl. And again in 2012 while parking cars at a festival. He owed me $6 and gave me 3 $2 bills
Sure, it's better to get one coin in change instead of two, but there's also a tradeoff of having too many choices. If you've ever worked a cash register, you'd see it's easier and faster to scoop three coins from one tray than it is to scoop one coin from one tray, move to the next, and scoop another coin from a different tray. In all, we have: .01 .05 .10 .25 .50 1.00 (Which is redundant with the $1 bill) IMHO - 6 different denominations of coins is just too many for most people, and is evidenced by most people being perfectly content using only: .01 .05 .10 .25 If the penny ever goes the way of the Canadian Dodo, I could see halves or dollar coins become more popular since cash register trays would be accomodating the same number of denominations.
The only place I have gotten halves in change in recent memory was at a Big 10 game back in January at a university. Apparently all the concessions were giving them out instead of 2 quarters.
All of the food at Notre Dame football and basketball games is priced in 50 cent increments, so they keep only 50 cent pieces for giving change. From what I have seen people respond positively to getting them. My 6 year old was pretty excited. He had never seen one before.
It's not bad. But a lot of members ignore revived threads. Some of the posters in this thread haven't been around in years. If you'd start a new thread, I bet there would be a fresh, interesting discussion.
I think two reasons suffice: not minted anymore for circulation, and because they tend to be kept when found. If I ever get a roll at the bank, I like spending them because people make a bunch of different remarks. But I'd imagine noncollectors hold on to them because they rarely see them
Half dollars are not given out because stores pander to our ignorance and ineptitudes. 90% of the people in this country just go with the flow without giving anything a second thought until conronted with change. Then they're all over it!
Every so often, I get a bundle of $2's from the bank. Something to do. I look through them for cool numbers or rarities then spend them. I burn on average, 3 tanks of gas a week, so spend a lot of them on that. I haven't gotten any for a while now, simply because I don't care for the teller at the bank that always has them and have been going to another branch. I filled up yesterday and hand the girl a hundred and she looked at me and asked if I had any $2's. Seems their customers had been asking for them for gifts and stuff and she said I was the one who kept them supplied.
I got a half in change yesterday at a convenience store. The cashier had to look at it closely to see what denomination it was. Then he took extra long trying to figure out what other coins he needed to make up my change. And normally he's fast.
Half dollars are only minted for collector sales now, not circulation. Been awhile too. So banks rarely have any.
