Sorry if this is an overdone topic but I just don't have the time to study all the comparisons. If possible, could anybody tell if this is fake from this photo? Thinking of buying this ungraded coin don't want to get burned! Thanks in advance!
I am not an expert on this coin. But a good basic rule of thumb is, if you can't tell if its genuine, don't buy it raw. Only buy a certified example in a known TPG holder. My opinion on this one, I would not buy it. It looks very suspicious to me, the details look off there are just a lot of alarm bells going off in my head.
Here is an image of a real one from PCGS, compare it to yours. You'll notice that LIBERTY looks way off on the example you posted, as well as a lot of other details.
The correct term is Doubled Die not Double Die.. Big difference Quote - "Note that the proper terminology for this occurrence includes the letter 'd' at the end of the first word, hence "doubled die". The term "double die" without the first word ending in 'd' is not proper numismatic terminology." closed quote I want to share this webpage with you - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Doubled_die
Thanks for the fast response, and filling me in on the correct lingo! Rookie maneuver for sure! Thanks jtlee, and paddyman98 for helping me avoid the error of buying an erroneous error.
We are not trying to get you to avoid buying one, rather buying the wrong one. This is a HEAVILY counterfeited coin. The big 3 (I know there are others) to avoid buying raw are the 1909-S VDB Lincoln Cent, 1955 Doubled Die Lincoln Cent and 1916-D Mercury Dime. Until you know all of the identifiers for the genuine examples only consider buying them in a TPG holder, and then only from a reputable dealer. And welcome to CoinTalk!!
Thanks I understand my gut feeling told me NO! Thankfully the seller sent me the pics as he wasn't sure himself. I needed some reassurance. Now after posting the faulty 1888 7 over 8 (Liberty head) and this done-up Doubled Die on CoinTalk today, I'm sure their corrupt ways have rubbed off on the 1922 plain the seller has for sale. Thanks for all the help!
The doubling looks off to me, especially on the LIBERTY and a lot of places in the motto. I would not buy this one. For the cost of this coin, I'd only buy a certified coin from a professional grading firm, like PCGS or NGC.
Forget the doubling, Lincolns bust is way off. Looks nothing like a real coin. I didn't even look at the lettering, didn't have to.
Look at how fat Abe has gotten in his face. certainly a fake and not a very good one at that. RUN FOREST RUN.
Oy.... you're two for two (from the threads I've seen thus far), so I'd be very careful if I was you about any future dealings with this source, at least until able to authenticate on your own.
The LIBERTY and DATE don't even line up as horizontal to the baseline. It looks as if the LIBERTY doubles Clockwise and the Legend and Date double Counter Clockwise, as well. You should report this to eBay.
ONLY BUY THIS COIN IF IT IS GRADED BY "NGC or PCGS". There are too many fakes. Also, check the price guide to see what the coin is worth! Some will attempt to gain more becaus they say its rare or better quality than it may be. In my world, I check prices and offer no more than 75% so I have equity in the coin.
Good comparison and info for sure! Now it really shows in chin, and is it me or is Abe showing a devious grin?
It is something a local acquaintance has for sale he said he wasn't positive and $150 each probably would have gotten for less but they are worthless now that I know. I have learned tons here that I couldn't see on my own, very grateful to all! Oh yes and not buying any coins from this source, he did send the pics to assist, so I am glad for that.
A real '55 DDO lincoln in that condition, raw, would command at least $1,000 if it were genuine. As mentioned above, this coin is often counterfeited. Welcome to CT.
