PCGS Grading of 2 Mercury Dimes

I'm a little upset. I crossed the bottom coin over to PCGS from an old MS65FB NGC holder. It crossed at 66+FB, which I was happy with at the time. BUT THEN I see a new coin on Coinfacts (top picture) that graded at MS67+FB. I know the other coin was also from an old MS65FB NGC holder (three of these very similar coins were on the market at the same time).

Now I'm a bit pissed. I don't know whether the other one was cracked, and that accounts for the different outcome. The coins are almost identical in strike, luster, surface quality, and eye appeal. I actually think the obverse on my coin is prettier.
It should have gone at least 67FB if the other went 67+FB. I'm also mad at myself that I didn't buy all three of these coins when I had the chance.

I guess I'll send for regrade.

Hi Ben, I was the owner of the most recent coin which got the 67+ FB. I sold it at the ANA Summer Seminar along with its twin to the same person. I'm excited to see that it graded so high. While your coin is beautiful, it is not as mark free as the 67+ example.

On top of that, this coin which recently got the 67+FB was the lesser of the two coins which I sold, so I would expect a 68FB to come up soon.

    Interesting . . . Thanks for replying.

Were your two Mercs in NGC MS65FB holders too, or were there more of the similar coin that came to market at the same time? I saw one more last week in Baltimore in an MS65FB NGC holder with a gold cac sticker. I love tracing the history of how coins from the same hoard disperse.

I still think I am going to try for regrade to get this to 67FB. I've been trying to get one to go 67+FB for a while without success (for my registry set). A couple of the other wildly toned 1945s in 67FBs on CoinFacts are mine (80522077 and 31742822).

Of course, the 68FB in the Forsythe set blows all of these out of the water . . . . What an amazing coin.

Yes my 2 were also in old NGC 65FB. I got them both off ebay from a seller who was offering 3, my 2 along with the one I assume is yours.

Now that I look back I should have probably tried to cross them myself, or at least sold them for more. Im just glad to see that they were as nice as I thought they were.

After seeing your post I checked Coinfacts and I found the other of my 2 coins. It crossed to PCGS 67+ without bands. Although the bands certainly look full to me.

The fact that it did not go FB likely means that the other submitter cracked the coins. I may crack and resubmit.

This all goes to the point that these 3 dimes are all basically the same quality of coin, yet the market values are wildly different.

Buy the coin, not the grade!

I agree the other looks FB as well.

I imagine they chose to get hardcore and considered the two nicks left of center on the center band to be "interruptions."

    The color is glorious.
