So I went to one of my bank branches and asked for a box of pennies (I'll nerd out here and say that it was a rush for me since this was the FIRST EVER CRH that I have done) and the lady brought out a box that was opened and had 50 hand wrapped rolls of pennies. I had to think about it for a minute and then thought that this may be better than getting a bank wrapped roll since customers could throw anything in there. My second box that I got today is where my question lies. So it is unopened and it got the best of me so I had to open it right way (I haven't even started on the other box yet). When I opened it, all of the rolls have a nice shiny Lincoln shield on the back and 2016 on the front. Is it safe to say that I got an entire box of brand new 2016 pennies? I'm ok with that. I can see myself being a hoarder and not touching them if that's the case. Thanks guys in advance for any comments and suggestions. Newbie here!!!

In my experience, pretty safe to say that they are all 2016.

Well? What is taking so long? Have you opened that hand-wrapped rolls yet? How many Canadian pennies were in it? Any buttons or slugs?

I want to go through a few rolls a day but life prevents me from doing so, lol. I have not opened any of the hand wrapped rolls yet. I'm just now learning that the Canadian pennies are worth keeping. They don't make them anymore right? Also, what is a button or a slug? I'm looking for error pennies as well. I wrote down all of the obvious dates that people have on the internet. The 55 double die and the 83 copper and the wide AM etc. I think I am going to buy that penny book or else lean on everyone here for advice and information.

I have 100's of solid date OBW rolls some back to the 50's as well as nickels dimes quarters and dollars. I search a few boxes a year but can't see well enough to realy enjoy it like I once did. The uncirculated rolls I have are for the grandkids to search or sell on eBay one day. Roll searching is fun and my nephew has been doing it with me since '09 when he was 5.

IMG_1725.JPG Went to the bank today to cash in some change we've saved as well as get a box of pennies. The lady behind the counter said we don't do boxes, just what customers bring in. I said that's fine, give me $25 worth please. She put the pennies in my plastic bag and gave them back. I looked when I got home and found 2 rolls that someone actually taped the end shut on and had dates marked on them.

1969 Philly cents command a nice little premium in high grades... is your roll all circs or are there any AUs or BUs in it?

I didn't open it. It's more exciting for me to let it sit there for a couple days than to open it right now!

Also, I'm not really too sure on the whole grading process yet. I bought the blue book and the red book. I noticed that they give some advice in the beginning. It's all new to me and I really value everyones input on here. Makes for a nice hobby!

It's a fun hobby... I search for everything from cents thru halves... and if you have Coinstar machines by you, make sure you check their reject bins... sometimes such things as silver coins and steel cents show up..

It's not patience, at least to me, really. I used to buy scratch off's all the time. I loved the thought of winning big but all I ever had was dissapointment, lol. NOW, I'm in to something that I actually like to do and if I let those rolls sit there I only prolong that feeling that I used to get from the scratch offs, lol. It's all good!

You can sell those new 2016 rolls on eBay for a premium... People like to look for errors

I got a box last year all 2007D.
There are other books you can buy to train your eye.
    Cherrypickers guide
And strike it rich with pocket change.
They are both available at Barnes and Noble.
    Good luck.

I've had more problems with the USPS and rolled coins... it's discouraged me from eBaying new rolls...

    scottishmoney Buh bye

If they are the HL String boxes you can ask to see through the holes on the side to see if they are new coins. I have had occasion to order boxes of coins from my banks and gotten new ones, but those are bargaining chips you can use at other banks that are reluctant to sell boxes of older coins because it is all they have on hand. You can always tell tellers that customers prefer "new and shiny" coins!

What kinds of problems have you had John? I was looking on eBay and people do have a few new rolls listed. It does look like they are selling too!

Smashing rolls for one, charging wrong postage rates for another.

Update for those wondering about the '69 and '96 rolls. Nothing. All garbage. Bunch of green on some of them.
