I cannot say I'm ready to even identify this one as authentic. There is irregularity in the shapes of the obverse stars, variation in the letter weight of "E PLURIBUS UNUM," missing serifs on the I of UNITED and first T in STATES (and weakness at the bottom left of the adjacent A), and the solid connection between the AM of AMERICA bothers me. All that said, the date, denticles and gross detail layout seem reasonably accurate, and keeping Doug's mention of damage above as well as the vagaries of imagery, it's not inconceivable that time spent in the ground could cause defects similar to what I'm seeing.
Yes you were. I'll bet lots of posters think this is VF. I try very hard not to even play GTG as it is hard to grade OR AUTHENTICATE coins in photos. I'm usually wrong.
VF-20 sharpness, has some pitting problems and has been lightly polished net VG 8 to 10 range. And Doug, that's a grade.
From PCGS - No Grades PCGS will not grade and encapsulate any coins with the following problems: 82 Filed Rims Rim(s) and/or edge is filed. 83 Peeling Lamination Potential for sealing damage. 84 Holed and/or Plugged Any filled or non-filled hole. 86 No Opinion – our experts are unable to determine a coin’s authenticity – fee not refunded 87 Not Eligible For Service Selected – the coin is too valuable for the chosen service level – fee refunded 90 Questionable Authenticity – the coin is most likely a counterfeit. 91|N-1 Questionable/Artificial Toning (or Questionable Color for copper) 92|N-2 Cleaned – surface damage due to a harsh, abrasive cleaning 93|N-3 Planchet Flaw - Metal impurity or defect in the planchet – depends on severity 94|N-4 Altered Surface - Whizzed, harsh cleaning, thumbed over (using a pasty substance to cover defects or alter the appearance). 95|N-5 Scratch - depends on the severity of the scratch. Rim dent. 96|N-6 No Service – coins we do not certify (i.e. medals, some privately made issues, etc.) or cannot certify (i.e. over-sized coins) 97|N-7 Environmental Damage – i.e. corrosion, coating (lacquer), excessively heavy toning, etc. 98|N-8 Damage – deliberate surface damage, i.e. graffiti, spot(s) removed, etc. – depends on severity 99|N-9 PVC (Poly-Vinyl-Chloride) – a plasticizer used to produce vinyl that will leach out of the holder and onto the coin, eventually damaging the surfaces. And directly from the PCGS web site - http://www.pcgs.com/grades/ - click on No Grades once on that page. And please notice, it says - No Grades. NGC has similar language for no grades on their web site - https://www.ngccoin.com/news/article/1140/No-grade-coins/ No Michael, that's you, personally assigning a grade to the coin. And it's not just me who says they cannot be graded. Both the ANA and the TPGs clearly state problem coins cannot be graded.
Will someone PLEASE post an image of a DETAILS GRADED coin in a PCGS slab. I don't have one laying around. All Aboard! We are going on a ride to "Silly Town" a place of "make believe," fantasies, wishes, and weasel worded TPGS disclaimers. As in: "I don't drive fast but here are copies of my thousands of speeding tickets for today."
I have a reality check for all you kiddies. Go to any major coin show and Ill show you thousands of straight graded coins on this list that TPGS's claim they don't holder: No Grades 82 Filed Rims Rim(s) and/or edge is filed. 83 Peeling Lamination Potential for sealing damage. 84 Holed and/or Plugged Any filled or non-filled hole. 91|N-1 Questionable/Artificial Toning (or Questionable Color for copper) 93|N-3 Planchet Flaw - Metal impurity or defect in the planchet – depends on severity 94|N-4 Altered Surface - Whizzed, harsh cleaning, thumbed over (using a pasty substance to cover defects or alter the appearance). 95|N-5 Scratch - depends on the severity of the scratch. Rim dent. 97|N-7 Environmental Damage – i.e. corrosion, coating (lacquer), excessively heavy toning, etc. Also note the "wiggle room."
Thanks! Unc's don't count because the TPGS's avoid determining MS-63 scratched vs MS-65 scratched as it is too difficult for a professional grader to evaluate a coin as if the scratch was not there as they miraculously have found a way to do with circulated coins. Besides, TPGS's claim to place a "value" on a coin.
