An interesting 1892-O Morgan; 1st images look more like a painting... I understand the coin is coming back from the TPG as counterfeit. Comments from one of my Morgan go-to guys after seeing the images: "At first glance, damn that looks real. Yes it has an enhanced look, the spaghetti hair. But look, at the denticles, weak and inconsistent. Hair that strong should have equally strong details. The clincher as far as I can see, the P and the L in Pluribus. The P is broken, the L is irregular". I did not attribute the VAM this is suppose to be; the comparison image is to a high grade known genuine one for reference. Best, Jack.
Any time I see photos of photos (on a computer screen) instead of photos of the coin, I have questions. Sure, it might just be a person who doesn't know how to take a proper photo or save a screen image, but it makes everything else seem more questionable as well.
Pretty good looking. I'm not sure I could have picked it out of a lineup. I would have just thought the photos were juiced, or it was AT, but doubt I would have questioned the authenticity of the entire coin. That's why I buy graded coins, I can't trust sellers, or myself. Likewise, I always read threads by @Jack D. Young so I can try to keep up on the fakes.
I am certain I have seen that coin somewhere. Perhaps while perusing coins on Ebay..... I guess the lesson here is that the crooks are getting better at their craft.
The hair detail above the ear does not look right. Here is an 1895-O dollar in Gem Uncirculated condition. It's almost impossible to find this coin this nice. Note the hair detail, which is simply super for an 1895-O. An no, it's not my coin. Here is an MS-67 graded coin from PCGS Coin Facts. Note the hair detail on "the best there is."
I feel for those that fall for it. I could have been one of those if it weren't for your posts. Thanks for sharing.
I had the same thought as @johnmilton as soon as I saw this coin. 1892-O is renowned for being the worst struck Morgan of them all. To see one with such perfect hair over the year was highly suspicious to me right off the bat.
