It is a nice coin. I'm not sure why for an official issue it had token on it though.

Actually, it was Britain that allowed its colony of Nova Scotia to have a limited self-rule called “responsible government” in 1848. Nova Scotia was the first colony in the British Empire to be granted responsible government. More details can be found in the links below.

    From https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dominion
Responsible government is self-government in the form of a parliamentary government. In the British Empire, “responsible government” only applied to internal colony affairs. Britain still remained responsible for foreign affairs, defense and international trade.

From https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Responsible_government#:~:text=The first instance of responsible, the efforts of Joseph Howe.

From the middle of the 19th century, the United Kingdom began to introduce systems of responsible government to the colonial governments of its settler colonies including in Canada, Australia, New Zealand and South Africa. These systems were heavily based upon the system that had developed in the United Kingdom itself with a bicameral legislature and an executive responsible to the Lower House. …
The first instance of responsible government in the British Empire outside of the United Kingdom itself was achieved by the colony of Nova Scotia in January–February 1848

Below is a link to one of my favorite sites for info about the British Empire. The link is to a table listing all members of the British Empire and gives their Entering and Exiting date. There is a link in the table to an informative page on that member. https://www.britishempire.co.uk/timeline/colonies.htm

Here is a copy of the info in the table for Nova Scotia:

If you follow the Nova Scotia link in the Name column, you can find what occurred at the dates. So you don’t have to do the search to find out. The Nova Scotia colony, “New Scotland” colony, was founded in 1621, but the territory was given to the French in 1632, after the Anglo-French War of 1627-29 . It was re-acquired in 1713 after the Treaty of Utrecht following the War of Spanish Succession. The colony of Nova Scotia was granted Dominion status in 1846. The Dominion of Nova Scotia became a member of the Dominion of Canada in 1867. Thereafter Nova Scotia’s membership in the British Empire is that of Canada’s.
