Hello everyone! * New thread here: Welcome to the Grand Opening of "Sal's Large Cent Lounge2023" -- Post yours too! Please post a coin or two and explain something about the coins if you wish. ; ) This is a common 1817(13 stars) / 1847 that I found while Metal Detecting in the early 2000's. It's amazing the condition that the ground preserves them in.
Here is an example of the 1801 cent with the three error reverse. The fellow who made this die "may have had a few" the night before. The "U" in "UNITED" was punched upside down and then right side up creating "IINITED", the left stem on the wreath is missing and the fraction is "1/000." This is not a super rare coin, but they are hard to find in high grade. I bought this one in an EAC auction many years ago because I was interested in the variety. This high grade 1820 cent was part of the Randel Hoard. Supposedly a keg of Mint State large cents was discovered when an old railroad station was razed. At first coin dealers and others could not believe that this hoard of large cents from 1816 to 1820 consisted of genuine coins. Some said they were restrikes. Others said that they were counterfeits. Today that hoard of perhaps 5,000 pieces makes up a large majority of the high grade large cents that are known from 1816 to 1820.
I had one of these but it just seemed like too much coin for me, so I sold it off again. It’s hard to explain the feeling, but it just seemed too nice and too expensive.
Piece I picked up last month, not especially pretty but it is a 1796 NC-3. There are about 19 pieces known.
7070 is the catalog number for the Dansco US type coin album. (Each Dansco album has its own number.)
But the 1801 three errors rev comes paired with two different obverses, the S-219 is, like you said, fairly common but tough to find in high grade, but the S-218 IS rare. The 219 is an R-2, but the 218 is an R-5+ and it is a TOUGH R-5+. (The obv of 218 also comes paired with a reverse that isn't the three errors and that one is a MONSTER tough coin! R-6+ and one of the toughest varieties in the entire early date set. I only need two draped bust Sheldon number varieties and that is one of them. )
