What is it likely to be dated and why does this example appear to show half a shield? Dealers info as follows Faustina II AR Denarius, 18mm, 3.27g. RIC 495a, RSC 15, BMC 1099 FAVSTINA AVGVSTA, draped bust right / AVGVSTI PII FIL, Venus standing left holding Victory and resting hand on shield set on a helmet. Any additional info will be most appreciated.
RIC states that the coins of Faustina II can't be dated "with any precision". It is assumed that coins with AVGVSTI PII FIL were issued under Antoninus Pius. There may be some more current thoughts on the dating. The shield is in profile-- sideways view.
Thanks. Curtis Clay managed to date these but I am unable to find his data. I will PM him. As regards the shield the only images I have been able to see on a denarius have it fully facing.
