I already have a couple of Gordian III's (don't we all) but the expression on this one's face was so 'innocent', it drew me in. Gordian III, AR Antoninianus. 239 A.D. 4.23 gm, 22 mm. Obverse: IMP CAES M ANT GORDIANVS AVG, radiate, draped bust right Reverse: ROMAE AETERNAE, Roma, helmeted and seated, left on shield, holding Victory and spear. Rome mint, (3rd Issue - 2nd Officina) Reference: RIC IViii. 38; Sear (1988) 2459; RSC 312; Provenance: J Eric Engstrom Collection, Ex CNG.
I don't got one... yet. But I really like this one. I only got one antoninianus I think it's a silvered probus not too sure.. anyway awesome coin man!
I only have one and it's not an antoninianus Gordian III, AD 238-244 AE, sestertius, 25.46g, 32.5mm; 12h; Rome, AD 238-239 Obv.: IMP CAES MANT GORDIANVS AVG; laureate, draped, and cuirassed bust right Rev.: VICTORIA AVG; Victory advancing left, carrying wreath and palm; S-C
Great coin, TC, and a nice younger portrait, TC. A few years older on mine here. GORDIAN III AR Antoninianus. 4.87g, 22mm. Rome mint, AD 240-243. RIC 95. O: IMP GORDIANVS PIVS FEL AVG, radiate, draped and cuirassed bust right. R: VIRTVTI AVGVSTI, the "Farnese" Hercules standing right, resting hand upon hip and holding club set upon rock.
Finding nice G III's isn't very tricky, and somehow cheap. Completing series is another story though ! Nice catch you got here @Topcat7 Gordian III, Denarius Rome mint, AD 240 IMP GORDIANVS PIVS FEL AVG, laureate and draped bust right DIANA LVCIFERA, Diana standing right, holding lighted torch in hands 3,08 gr Ref : RSC # 69, RCV # 8673 Q
Nice coin TC. I find many of the portraits of GIII, like yours, makes him look rather, how should I say it, stupid. He just looks like the kid in school that had an IQ of 10. GORDIAN III AR Antoninianus OBVERSE: IMP CAES M ANT GORDIANVS AVG, radiate, draped bust right REVERSE: P M TR P II COS P P, Victory advancing left with wreath & palm Struck at Rome, 239 AD 4.2g, 21mm RIC 19, RSC 199
Nice GIII TP7! I don't collect RI, so mine are a bit humble... I use Photoscape, and it was a freebie. My GIII RI Gordian III 238-244 CE AE As 25mm Hercules S-C
There are several "freebie" software that will do the trick. Like I said, I use Picasa and it is free as well. I'm not pushing it, just letting you know it's free as well.
Some nice Gordian coins, I would post my favorite Gordian Cappadocia coin but I think people will start getting sick of it. Been posting it a lot. I use Photoshop
I use 'Open Office' (free) and I place both photos (side by side) on a document page and the I 'crop' the resulting image using "Ashampoo Snap" (also free). All savings can go into more coins.
I feel like a spendthrift using expensive store-bought software for the purpose but I never learned to use the Freeware options and have had s/w for my other photo uses (I have been known to shoot things that were not coins). I spent much of my life in darkrooms with chemicals and mice scampering across our feet. What we can do now with even cheap programs like Elements makes all I learned about photography completely worthless (except they keep sending me that retirement check every month). We used to have one guy who did absolutely nothing except paint out dust spots on prints. Now my camera sensor vibrates every time you turn it on so there is no dust (except that stuck to the coins by that Renwax junk).
Thanks for the heads up on the collage function in picasa, I never knew it was there. So, in appreciation for the pointers, I made a collage of my Gordian III sestertius:
I use Gimp2.8 (free) and have fun with it, although I probably don't use it 50 % of what is available More Gordy ?
