I'm not sure what the proper term is for the split rim unless that is just what it is. It appears to have 2 separate rims that join into one. What is the cause of this?

Yeah, I know it's not really worth anything other than face value pretty much. I just see them a lot and wondered what caused it and what the proper name was for it.
