I went to work yesterday and there was a roll of 2005 p westward journey bison nickels in my till, it was in a plastic roll and already cracked like if it was going to be opened then my co worker decided to wait so I went ahead and opened it the rest of the way looking for the "oh so popular speared bison" die gouge but didnt find it...what a shame. Anyone actually think the speared bison will hold value in the future or was it more of a fleabay hype. On a positive note I did find a pretty toned one in the lot. I would post pics but I still havent upgraded to a better camera and the white balance is pretty bad so it wouldnt show.
I think a lot of it was hype but it will hold some value. Value is determined by supply and demand so who knows where the value will settle.
If it is a popular variety and well known today, the likelihood is that its common and will be for as long as it will matter to anyone reading these comments. It may hold "some value" but there is no reason to believe it will be financially meaningful.
Only time will tell which of the (numerous) errors of this type on Modern coinage will retain any numismatic interest. Part of the cachet of an "error" is how far it departs from "normality," and their relevance is diluted if you can expect one error or another in every single issue. Looked at from another standpoint, in total they_do make an interesting "subset" collection topic. Heck, the Homestead Quarters themselves make an interesting subset. They're beginning to remind me of "Scribbling Scratches" 1921 Morgans, seeming like someone went to the deliberate effort of doing something to each individual die to differentiate it from all others.
