I've been going through a bunch of coins I recently inherited and found a 1981 Proof set. Sorry for the bad picture, it's hard to get a much clearer one with the coins in the case and the case is pretty scratched up. Just wondering your opinions if this is a type 1 or 2? The coin pictured is the Susan B. Anthony.
I believe you're referring to the 1979 Type 1, which looks like a blob. This looks like a 1981 type 1 (which is the same as the 1979 type 2). The type 2 looks flat.
1979 Type 1 looks like a blob, so they replaced it with Type 2. 1979 Type 2 wore quickly, so it became a blob. 1979 Type 2 is the same as 1981 Type 1. When that became a blob, they replaced it with 1981 Type 2. For more info, see here: http://www.smalldollars.com/dollar/page29.html
Your coin is a Type I. The 81-S Type II in particular has an S with big bulb serifs and more importantly, has different sized upper and lower loops.
I was looking at my red book when I made the determination. It shows Type 1 (Rounded) and Type 2 (flat) - the OP's looks rounded.
According to that web description, I would have a 1981 Type I, with is originally the 1979 Type II dies?
They all look the same to me. For the life of me. I couldn’t tell if I had both. Took me years before I could tell if I had a 1982 small date. But those S’s. Every time I look. I change my mind
