I have the opportunity to purchase a RAW 1965 silver quarter that was pulled from circulation by the current owner. I’ve pulled auction comps (they are few and far between) and details grades really torpedo value. I’d love input from folks on potential grade of this coin. I’ve asked for and await better photos.
    Thanks!

I'd love to buy one myself. That's my birthyear.

I'll guess XF on that one. Maybe XF45 on a good day?

Thanks Lord M! Comps for clean graded xf range from 5k to 9k which is a pretty big window.

And way too rich for my blood, for a quarter minted in my lifetime. But they're definitely cool.

Only thing I like more than these are those Indian cents that got struck on gold quarter-eagle planchets, but those are really out of reach!

Have you weighted it? If that’s silver it should be graded and slabbed.

It sounds like he doesn't have it in hand just yet.

I’m still working with the seller. It weights correct for a silver quarter and tested correctly with a laser for silver. I have a couple better photos that might help with grade.

Seriously @Mark Metzger--is that accurate?! What are your sources? I've just sorted out 1965 quarters from my jar full of various coins.

I know, right? Is this even the famous 1965 Silver coin? Can we see the edge please? ;)
I really don't see this being true. :p

Yep, sure did. Here are pictures of one such quarter. Did the magnet test...nothing stuck.

That does not look like a silver quarter. Let’s see the edge. Furthermore, the “magnet test” is totally meaningless on US quarters, since none of them, whether copper-nickel clad or silver, will stick to a magnet.

The jury is still out on Metzger’s piece in the OP. We’ll need to see the edge on that one as well, among other things.

Here are a couple photos confirming edge and weight. The big question for me now is whether or not the coin has been cleaned. In auction comps, that makes a difference of several thousand dollars. I’ve attached an image of auction comps as well.

Sure looks like silver. Does look like it could have been cleaned, though. Then again, it might pass muster at a TPG.
