After the ANA show, my son and I are taking the Sunset Limited to "Nawlins". I'd like to scratch another "mint building visited" off my checklist. Does anyone know a) if the building's still there, and b) if so, what's it used for these days.
Per Wikipedia: Since 1981 it has served as a branch of the Louisiana State Museum. Damaged by Hurricane Katrina in 2005, after over two years of repairs and renovations, the museum reopened in October 2007. As of April 2015, the museum's music exhibits include instruments used by some of New Orleans' notable jazz musicians, photographs, and posters, and are planned to open as the Louisiana Music Museum. The site is also a performance venue for jazz concerts, in partnership with the New Orleans Jazz National Historical Park and the private "Music at the Mint" organization. The Louisiana Historical Center is located on the third floor of the building. The center includes collections of colonial-era manuscripts and maps, and primary and secondary source materials in a wide range of media. It is open to anyone with an interest in Louisiana history and culture.
@Kirkuleez would know. This isn't a true bucket list father/son trip is it kurt. Hope you really are doing all right. Stay rigid, uptight & buracratic brother! What days will you be at ana?
I've got a handful of those. They're neat. Bet you'll at least be able to squeeze a souvenir NO Mint penny hopefully.
At 61, and a stroke and cancer survivor, it's all "bucket", baby. But no. Why? What have you heard? They tell me I'm fine. Could make 90, but probably not. I will be arriving at the Anaheim Convention Center Monday the 8th, and I leave for Burbank Saturday the 13th about 6PM. I'll start Monday helping to accomplish the turnover from PNG pre-show to ANA show. I am Rhonda Scurek's "minion". I've had cataract surgery, so I'm now a two-eyed minion, not the Cyclops kind.
With your background, something tells me when that bucket is checked, you are going to check out James Cohen & Son's store on Royal St right?
Sho' 'nuff! Whuther I be buyin' or jes' lookin' d'pends on how naughty I was wit dat ol' budget in Anaheim. As a Phils fan, I need to look in on Chase Utley and say howdy-doo before I head east.
Count your blessings just to go and if you're really fortunate, there may be a rolling machine available.
My great grandfather worked at the New Orleans mint in the late 1890s, we think he did assay work, but we're not really sure. Later I worked at a sort of tourist trap coin shop inside of the mint. Pretty cool job, but it didn't last too long. It's a pretty nice museum and is right next to the Franck market. I believe they have a coin exhibit going on at the moment, so you timing could be just right. You may also want to visit Cohn and sons as well. It is only a few blocks away and they've been there since 1890. Prices are stupid because they sort of market to tourists, but they negotiate with you and are pretty reasonable. My avatar proof half cent came from them. Send me a PM when you get in, I love meeting CT members.
That's neighborly of you. I won't be packing a PC, but I will be awash in iOS devices, so I'll check in with you. I have all day August 17 for New Orleans and much of the 18th before flying out to Philly in the evening. We're staying near, but not technically in, the French Quarter. Let's not have any of that hurricane stuff, okay?
At that time of the year, in this place, you pays your money and you takes your chances on storms. I live right outside of New Orleans and would consider it a privilege to meet you, also. In fact, I would like to meet Kirk one of these days too.
Was in Nawlins about a year ago, and had the pleasure to meet Kirk. And yes, they do have a mint building there, with a museum that also covers coins and minting. You can take the tram (streetcar) to French Market; I was there but outside only. Just did not have the time - too much to do and see in the city ... Christian
Cool resource, thanks! I do carry a half roll of BU 1968-S cents for just such encounters. The zinc-a-dinc-a-doos make crummy elongates.
I flew out of Ft. Lauderdale once during a full blown tropical storm, but I've yet to experience a genuine 74+ mph sustained wind hurricane, unless you count the blowhards on the state House of Representatives floor. I lived through truly wet post-hurricane phase tropical storms here in PA - Agnes in 1972, "super storm Sandy" in 2012, but our hills and huge honkin' deciduous trees have a tendency to disrupt winds the way shorelines can't. Of course the trees get disrupted too and create their own challenges, but still...
I was there briefly on our New Orleans trip. It was interesting but I understand there used to be more. Minting equipment and some historical photos are displayed. However as previously mentioned, the city is moving to use this facility for multiple purposes.
Looks like you'll be in town for the coin and paper money exhibit http://www.hnoc.org/moneymoneymoney/
