Winter of 1865 General Sherman camped on the Broad River directly behind my old office and lobbed artillery at our states capitol. Many of the artillery strikes are highlighted today with bronze stars on our capitol building.

What does all this have to do with a contest you say?.... Many years ago a friend of mine who metal detects for military uniform buttons was working the property just behind my office. That property is known to have been General Sherman's encampment when he laid siege to our capitol. It was there that he found a coin that quite possibly was dropped on that riverbank by a Union soldier in the mud of the riverbank. The mystery coin is below. Why is the photo so distant? Read on to see...

I can hear the cries now... Get on with it, Randy!!... OK, so I just read a book that was gifted to me by our very own @lordmarcovan that was such an enjoyable read. The book pokes a little fun at us sophisticated collector types while lauding the working and relic coins that receive little regard in our hobby. Coins with a story much like the story that I recounted above. The book is Lost Cents, Dead Owners by Michael S Shutty Jr. and it is such a fun read.

Dangit, Randy... What is the contest then?? OK, OK.... You have until Thursday August 31st to make guesses on the date and denomination of the mystery coin in the second photo above. Whomever is closest wins the coin and the book. If the date and denomination are guessed prior to 8/31, I will close the contest and award the winner.

WTG, Randy. Very cool contest, if exceedingly quick!

Enjoy that bit o’ history, Russ!

I hear the book is good, too. To my shame, I only skimmed it before passing it along to Randy, who said it was a fun read, as you saw.

Randy, are you stalking me, my friend. Did you get my address (again ;) ), and hand deliver this awesome prize? I feel like I just made my guess to your contest this morning. And it's here already! Well the USPS deserves credit when due. That was amazingly fast.

Sweet $.02 piece with a real cool backstory. I'm going to enjoy the book.

    Thank you, brother!

I hope you enjoy the read as much as I did. My eyes glazed over just a bit at some of the chemistry he discusses during the corrosion process, but 90% of the book is just a joy to read. I always felt that the working coins of our hobby never got the recognition that they deserve and the author certainly agrees..... And don't forget to buy that lottery ticket!

I've already read a couple of pages. Right off the bat I'm excited to continue the read. The authors 'working coin' enthusiasm shines through immediately.

No spoilers though! Please don't tell me Colonel Mustard did it in the kitchen with a hammer ;)

I won't... I will tell you that when my buddy found that crusty old two cent coin that I paid him two fine (cheap) cigars in trade for it..... Oh how I do miss a fine (cheap) cigar... LOL

But that other 10% is the part I want the most! Probably. (Actually, I'm guessing some of the stories he has to tell might be even more fun than the chemistry stuff -- and for me, that's saying a lot.)

I have an album full of detector finds that would fit well with the theme of that book. Some came out of the ground pretty nice, while others could be fairly described as “spooky”.
