Please guess the grade of the 2001-P Jefferson Nickel shown below. I have attached a poll for you to cast your vote and you may select up to 3 different things: the numerical grade, 5FS or 6FS or Not FS, and + grade or star designation or PL designation. Please don't forget to vote in the poll about how you think NGC graded the coin, and as always, comments welcome.
Nice coin! I went with MS66 5FS. Can't see the last one very good and besides I don't pay attention to steps. I have a cane and use the ramp.
I'm gonna say it's a MS66 6FS PL. I say MS66 only because I see a couple dings on the chin line and I little spot in the field on the reverse towards the bottom. It's clearly 6FS...I don't think the steps could be any better. Finally, I say it's PL because the luster looks notably different than in previous @Lehigh96 photos. To my knowledge, you have never posted a PL nickel before and I am somewhat familiar with your photography style. This one looks different and I think it's because it's a PL (also, I have a PL clad Washington Quarter and I get the same effect when photographing).
MS 67 6FS and PL ….the photos suggests enough mirrors in the fields to get a PL and the coin looks clean enough to get the 67 (a few too many small marks scattered around to get into a 68)….the steps are all there
Sorry, but there are too many bag/contact marks on both sides for this coin to be more than MS60 6FS. And anyone saying 5FS needs to refresh themselves on Full Step specifications. This coin looks like one that came fresh-rolling out of a Philly mint bag…imo…Spark
This ladies and gentlemen is how you nail a "guess the grade," spot on in every aspect, down to the soul read of my photographs. Bravo Richie, take a bow!
Haha...nice. Thanks for the kind words Paul. It's funny, this is a series I have never collected but thanks to your threads I have practiced grading so many I can usually get pretty close. I was able to nail the PL on this one in part because of my PL 1998-D Washington Quarter photographs very similarly.
I expected an MS67 6FS grade when I submitted it because the PL nature of the surfaces magnifies every tiny mark. On a coin with standard surfaces, this would be an MS67 6FS all day long, but NGC graders are experts at skunking my submissions, and this coin is no exception.
