I know that thick lettering can be considered a DDO, but how can you tell for sure it is a DDO?

In this eBay listing I don't see any doubling but I do see thick letters.

compared to my 1934 cent I don't see much of a difference. I know notching comes in to play, but if it is a worn coin how are you supposed to tell? thanks in advance.

If I was looking at the date, (for example)
    They do look the same.
varietyvista.com has the die markers, in each stage.
If I had to guess at that die stage /wear.
I would call it an 80 year old coin.

The one on e-bay is not a doubled die. Hahaha. Just a con artist selling a cojn like yours that is flattened so it looks thick from wear.
Please look at this site and their listings for 1934 doubled dies for future comparisons

Interesting, all DDOs for this year are class VI doubling, which has no split serif and is usually center doubling too .....

Split serif? Don't you mean "notching"?

I think myself this is a Doubled Die .....
Not sure if it's 2, not enough images for me to tell which one ....

Here's a 1930 Buffalo Nickel I own, it's Wexler DDO-008 that's has class VI doubling . This one has center doubling on the Date, and Liberty . I put arrows for the center doubling ( Liberty ) .

Then, what IS the difference between notching and split serifs?

I don't know; where is he?

There's no easy answer to worn DD's in some cases. For instance, in the absence of further information - other die pickups, date location, anything - I've no way of ever knowing if the Ebay auction coin is attributed accurately or not. That sort of thickness in the date of an MS63 example - Variety Vista's "sample" coin for 1934 DDO-002 - is a far different thing than that sort of thickness in the date of a F-VF example, and hardly conclusive.

Not saying the seller is wrong, just that I don't know how to prove him right.

I have a 1970 cent that I am positive is ddo-008. However the L in liberty is smashed and that is the definite marker for the die. Even though IGWT is really fat with faint separation lines, and matches the pics exactly with that L smashed I can't get it attributed.
