Hi all I found an old bag of coins belonging to my late father and wondering if anyone knows anything about this one.
It looks like a 1909 (1894-1911) Chinese Empire, Hubei Province, 7.2 Candareens. It would be 82% Silver, 2.7 grams. Krause #129. Or pretty close!
Welcome to Coin Talk Jacqueline Looks like you’ve got a labor of love ahead. We’ll try to guide you on the journey
Thank you. I didn’t think I was interested in coins until I found these. I’m seeing the beauty. I also found about 10 wheat pennies 2 of which are 1944 . I’ve tried to look closely at them but they don’t look any different than every other one to me. I live in Scotland and believe it was my grandfather who was the collector. Coins been in back of a cupboard for 50 years
Here's a link: https://en.numista.com/catalogue/pieces26477.html I've seen a lot of counterfeit Chinese silver coins. I don't think this is a counterfeit, but we'll need someone with more experience to chime in. Weighing it will be a good start, it should weigh 2.7 grams.
I can't help much but this link may get you started.. https://en.numista.com/catalogue/index.php?r=Hubei+Province,+7.2+Candareens&ct=coin&im1=&im2=&tb=y&tc=y&tn=y&tp=y&tt=y&cat=y&ru=&ca=3&no=&v=&i=&b=&d=&u=&a=&dg=&m=&f=&t=&w=&mt=&g=&se=&ie= [edit] I see Mr. Numismatist beat me to it
That is really helpful thank you both. I’ll weigh my coin . It could be worth a little after taking a quick look at that link however I find these sights a bit confusing
Could go from $25-60. US dollars If you get 2 interested bidders on an eBay battle, even more. Less auction expenses.
Just wondering, but are you aware that you should not try to clean your coins? It almost always makes them less valuable.
As to the weight of the coin, does your scale have zeroes after the decimal. such as 3 g ( no zero) , 3.0 g, or 3.00 g, etc. The more zeroes after the decimal, the more accuracy. If it is the first, the weight could be from 2.5-3.5 and not determinative. If it is 3.0 possibly either real or fake, or 3.00 YES Fake, 3.000 For sure fake. A scale with at least 2 zeroes will save you from mistakes and lost money, IMO, Jim
My scale is rubbish to be honest. I don’t think it’ll be fake considering how long it’s been in the family
Most of the coins you inherited are probably real. If you post a few more we can get a better idea. Coin by coin. And most people don’t have a scale of quality to deal with silver, gold, even copper & brass coins.
