So I thought I might dig way back in my safe and pull out my Apollo 11 five ounce hockey puck. I hadn’t looked at it for a long time and how can you not love viewing a giant proof strike, right? But to get to it, I had to move these….. I think I went a wee bit overboard on the Apollo 11 commemoratives. Don’t you think? Yeah, I was all in. The ten year old kid that was in awe over the astronauts back in July 1969 made this purchase…. Sheesh!!
Not a bad obsession to have and a lovely set of coins! It's one of the better things the US Mint has done the last few years.
Beautiful set of coins. Wouldn't it be nice if more young kids had an obsession for something collective or something productive?
Very nice. As someone who loves the space program as passionately as I do...you'd think I would have picked up at least 1 Apollo 11 piece but it has never happened. I think the concave design just didn't do it for me. Coins shouldn't be bent. LOL.
Honestly, that is what it sorta reminds me of. I think that is why I shied away from this issue and and Baseball issues. That said, I love my East German commemorative proof which commemorates the joint USSR-DDR spaceflight (Soyuz 31/29) issued in 1978 (with a mintage of 2,200). But, it's not bent. LOL.
I shied away from Baseball and Basketball because sports, meh, and I was never very excited about "novelty shapes" for coins. I bought the Apollo issues despite their shape, not because of it. I may not be quite as all-in on them as Randy, but I've definitely got one each of proof and uncirculated issues for the pucks, the gold, and the dollar. I'm petty sure I've got the halves somewhere as well.
Meow bought the entire run of 5 oz ATB quarters. Those take up a lot of room in the Cat Hoard. But Meow has stopped buying Mint stuff for the last few years as other things get priority in hoarding now. And also those things get to be real pricey with so many to have to get to make the set.
I too am a space collector. I never ordered from the US Mint until the Apollo 11 5 oz coin and gold coin became available. Below, are two separately issued US Mint medals that were packaged in a nice wooden box labeled "America in Space." One medal weighs 6 oz and the other weighs 12 oz. I picked them up at spot from my LCS, in 1990 the boxed set sold for $495.
Are the 5 ounce ATB quarters proof? I swear, I could take a shave in the 5 ounce Apollo puck if it weren't round.
