They're the lowest mintage nickel since the 1959-P... 39 and 46 million respectively for the P and D minted...
It took me nearly two years to complete my set completely from circulation. 38-s and 50-d were the hardest with two each. One easy way to tell the reverse of 38 from the reverse of 40 on circulated 39s is to look at the S in pluribus. The steps won't help you because they are worn off most circulated 39s. On the Rev of 38 the S will be rounded at the top, and on the Rev of 40 it will have a clear serif. As all 40s are the reverse of 40 (except the one proof die that is the Rev of 38) use one as a guide to compare to any 38 you have handy to see the difference.
Found a 1942-P and a couple of 1950 phillys last week to get me down to needing only the 38-S, 39-D, 43-D, 44-S, 45-P, 45-S, 50-D, and 55-P to complete my set...
$1400 in nickels, I'm going to be keep track of all the pre 60s, buffalo's, foreign, and 2009s. I'll post results when I'm dont. I feel like this many boxes will yield a fair average for coins found per box
Facevalue, how did you accumulate so many boxes? It that just a week's worth, or like the remainder of a wedding gift?
Mine is exactly 1 per box... It really depends though. I sometimes will go a week or two with none, and then run into 5 in a week... I've gone through about 60,000 nickels in 5 months and have found 30 of them along with 10 Buffalos and 1 V Nickel..
