Hello group. Have a question or two. I am now trying to concentrate my efforts in a few areas for my future collections. I do have my proof and mint sets about where I want them. I am now looking at Morgans and peace dollars. I see adds all the time for uncirculated, brilliant uncirculated, premium brilliant uncirculated, choice brilliant uncirculated , gem brilliant choice uncirulcated .. well you get the idea. Gives me a headache just thinking about it. Some of the coins I have seen on Ebay look suspicious to me in particular some cleaned coins. I understand that some cleaned coins are part of collecting in early issued coins like the Morgans but would like to stay away from this as much as possible. Maybe the impossible dream...lol.

What i would appreciate is any recommendations from members who have had a good experience from a dealer/dealers that will not rip me off to bad.

Secound question would be concerning certified coins. If i go the certified route, will NGC , PCGS, or ANACS, certify cleaned coins or those with a oily residue finger prints on coins. I am probably expecting to much for what I am willing to pay but it does not hurt to ask.

Thanks and I hope my questions are not as confusing to member as it is to me after reading this post.

The problem with buying Morgan and Peace Dollars off of eBay based on the pictures, is that if it looks too good to be true, then it probably is! While there are many respected Coin Dealers on eBay, there are some that sell dipped, cleaned or whizzed coins every day without devulging this information in the Listing Description. You can pose the question to the Sellers, asking if the coin or coins has/have been dipped, cleaned or whizzed but many will respond with a "Not to my knowledge!" answer. If the Seller is truely honest and the coin or coins has/have not been dipped, cleaned or whizzed, then they are not afraid to say so.

NGC and PCGS will not certify any cleaned, damaged, altered or tampered with coins! ANACS will certify them however and note on the label any cleaning, damage, altering or tampering to the originality of the coin.

Personally I set a price limit as to how high I will go on internet sites and after that I prefer to examine the coins in the flesh so to speak.

I come across Morgans and Peace Dollars all the time at an auction I frequent.
I just bought an 1878 Morgan (7 tail-feathers) in BU condition for $47.50.
If there is something you are looking for, just let me know and I would be willing to try to help you get it.
I may have some dates that you need, already.

NGC and PCGS will certify coins with fingerprints. See attached photo for proof!

This IHC is grade PR63 by PCGS.

My top two recommendations for bulk ebay sellers are tnfc and carolinacoin. I too sell morgans on ebay although not nearly as many. I mostly deal in PL/DMPL morgans.

i do the same, if the coin i am bidding on is not worth three times my final bid i will not buy it. that's my personal rule. seems to work pretty good.

First of all, it is not always possible to tell when a coin is graded that it has a print. That is a big problem all around. Secondly, why should they not grade a coin with a print. Do not all circulated coins have finger prints?

With buying Morgan and Peace Dollars, you must be very careful to learn what to look for. Many coins described at PQ Brilliant Uncirculated are often AU sliders. Ebay sellers can easily use photo techniques to alter the looks of dollars.

An ebay seller I would recommend is hallenbeckcoins. It is the online portion of Hallenbeck Rare Coin Galleries. They often have some very nice Morgans for sale, both on ebay and through there website.

    Ruben,

You are 100% correct in this! Many fingerprints on coins, do not show up (become visible) until months and sometimes even years after they are inadvertently placed on a coin. Also, since fingerprints are not really damage, alterations or tampering, then there is no reason for a TPG not to certify the coin!
