Curious aren't we. Don't worry I couldn't give away super rare Indian coins if I tried. This is a very rare heavy unit 8+ grams - copper unit of the pre-Satavahana period c. BC 225. The obverse is the Stavahana dynastic symbol or a modified Gandhara mark, the coin is from the Vidarbah region and has an elephant right, and bohdi tree.

Great, that's a Qarakhanid AE broad dirhem! I love these coins. 32 mm, a beautiful 12th century calligraphic design. This is mine. Just today I was trying to get around some of my Qarakhanids, they are very difficult.

Curious, do you buy uncleaned/unid'ed lots online, or know metal detectorists that you buy from? I am hoping to get into gathering up and going through lots/groups of late Roman nummi someday.

 

Well everyone, better late than never. My sorting box is a small round hard candy tin about the size of a hockey puck that will hold 6 or 7 coins in flips and is not noticeable if left lying around.


This batch represents 6 weeks worth of purchases, which is a higher quantity than I normally acquire for that time frame and was predominantly driven by an unexpected bonus from work. We have an Antoninus Pius Dupondus, Diva Faustina Denarius (my 3rd husband wife combo), Constantius Chlorus, which completes my Tetrachy set, an Egyptian Probus and a Macedonian Interregnum with a hard to resist smiley face shield.


My sorting period varies since I don't just photograph, measure, weigh and attribute pieces in a hurry, or sometimes at all. My approach is about savoring the coins, researching the emperor (or deity) and learning about the region, culture, politics or period. This activity tends to help my understanding of where an individual coin fits within the big picture framework of ancients. At some point I will feel that I've wrapped my brain around an individual coin to a degree where I can move it into the collection and move on to others.

 

For some reason, I have dreams of eating my coin collection, and regretting it afterwards.

 

I suppose that would be one way to get some additional patination on them...

 

When playing with my brother, I once swallowed two coins (Dutch nickel coins of 25 cents, it was in the sixties). My mother thereafter had to prod my childish excrements for two days to make sure they came out. They were brown (I saw them). My mother was not amused.

 

I have several Nederland 25cent coins that I have picked up in my travels. You have now FOREVER tainted them with your story every time I look at them...

 

I don't think my mother washed them to put them into circulation again, they were probably thrown away.

 

Hi @ValiantKnight! Sometimes I buy unidentify lots online, but not to a particular seller, only If I think that lot might be usefull.

 

GAH, can't do that!, there ugliness ruins the beauty of ancients.
