A few months ago I submitted a batch that included a known mule of the 1795 Liberty and Security halfpenny and the 1795 Irish halfpenny. This is my coin NGC sent it back identified as TTN2 which looks like this: So I sent it back as a mechanical error. I sent them pics of a similar coin and the correct numbers of Baker-31M muled with DH Dublin-9. It took them over a month to send me this: Still wrong. So now what? Do the graders even look at coins? Do they have any clue what they’re doing when it’s not a Morgan dollar? I’m so irritated with them right now.
I sympathize with your frustration. I guess they're rather lacking in that department. I know this might seem 'flip', but relax, enjoy a beer, and don't send them anything else.......PCGS any better in this regard?
It's a general issue with (seemingly) everyone nowadays (and one that has become worse since 2020). I continue to be amazed (when I really shouldn't) with what people tend to mess up (banking, simple email questions, food, etc). Depending on what you plan to do with the coin, I would offer a few suggestions. 1) If you plan to keep it in your collection and it's not for a registry set, just leave it like @green18 suggests. 2) If you plan to sell and having the correct attribution does not change the value much, just note that it's a mechanical error and try to sell it as-is (let the next person attempt to fix the label). 3) If it's for a registry or there is a big difference in value, then you have to keep battling with NGC. Try to see if you can go further up the chain. Document the process and have all the proof needed that the proper correction will be made. If they don't budge and you paid with credit card, suggest that you will file a chargeback or even go ahead and do it (they will likely close your account so this needs to be the option only if you don't plan to use NGC again or have a different way of sending coins in).
I get that take and I had my membership with them lapse because I wasn’t impressed. However at this point, I’ve paid them for a service they have not yet performed. I’m more incredulous at their incompetence than angry.
Now I don’t know if I’m right. Mostly I’ve found 2 numbers and the description of this coin as a mule. However I’ve just found a page that lists D&H #9 as a singular designation of this mule. I might have made an ass of myself. Crap.
I kinda didn’t mean that. I’m thinking like when you plan something months ahead of time like a display or birthday only to have these delays. Sorry for my comment
Not my department so I’m not aware of what they’re doing or not doing. I’ll send this discussion to the token department. Barry Murphy
It does turn out that the designation is correct but as I pictured above, usually there’s some indication that it’s a mule other than just the number.
