Thoughts on this 1924 Peace Dollar?

This was in a stapled cardboard holder for the last 25 years until I recently took it out to put in an air tight. I'm assuming someone taped it in a homemade coin album?

Gotcha, I like it other than the brown spots. Would acetone make a difference or just leave it alone?

 

Sorry for the cras remark Steve......tired tonite...Acetone would most likely help the look and you can't go wrong there. In other words, you ain't gonna damage nothin'........

 

No problem, I figured it was worth it's weight. I read about acetone for glue/tape/sticker residue so I think I'll give it a shot. Thanks!

 

I like the coin. Acetone may help with the spots but don't wipe or touch the surfaces with anything. That's where folks mess up. The coin has a nice old skin. Any rubbing is going to kill it.
I'm thinking there was once some type of album or holder that used a strap to hold the coin in place. Maybe a holder used by a bank as a promotion if you opened an account. I don't know. Fun coin.

 

I've seen the take marks many time. Seems like people would tape a few together when they saved them. Mostly folks who went through the great depression.
The young folks on this site should look it up and see what people went thru back then.

 

Thanks. What should be used to handle it when flipping it in acetone and taking it out? Let it air dry?

 

I have a group of different sized shot glasses. I pick the size that only let the rims of the coin touch the glass. That lets me pour off the used acetone and slide the coin onto a cloth without touching it. Next I rinse the glass and the coin under running water and start over with fresh acetone. After the last bath the coin will air dry in about 2 seconds. I don't use water after the last acetone bath. I have never damaged a coin using this method.
I have had coins come out looking worse than they started. You don't always know what's under the junk you remove.

 

Put the coin flat and drop GOO GONE on it to cover the surface. Let it sit. Then fresh Goo Gone on a Q-tip (roll don't rub}. Then Acetone and air dry. Unfortunately, the surface under the tape was prevented from toning and will be a different color after treatment. That can be fixed.

Nope. I use acetone on adhesive residues first, if it does not come off fast I put the GG on it (let it sit), remove it w/more GG, then acetone to finish. I guess someone will write that we need to remove the acetone residue too...

ARE YOU KIDDING! That is a "glue residue - details coin." That's a keeper but I would not have believed they would have slabbed it with out calling the customer for permission to remove the lumps of glue in the recesses FOR FREE! You don't get that kind of customer relations from the two big dogs...such a shame.

 

The coin looks flat and of course most of the 24 looks like that in the first place. I never use acetone so I can help you there, but is it a Vam ?? The reverse has something going on on the bottom of the Rays near the leaves.

 

It is a clash mark. I don't bother attributing most VAM's unless they are "special", Top 100's, Elite or 50's, or I'm getting paid t do it. Eventually, every dollar will have a VAM #

And it looks like this one is VAM 1BZ. Normal dies, but a collar clash on the reverse by PEACE and the mountains. Raised mark in the rays is a common clash from the top of Liberty's head.
