Amongst my many collecting themes is that of ADVENTVS coins. These were produced to commemorate the arrival of the emperor and can thus be placed at a point in history. The following coin of Aurelian is the first of his Adventus types that I have added to my collection. This coin is dated to A.D. 273. It was in 273 that Aurelian returned to Rome after defating the the Palmyrene Empire and brings Zenobia to Rome as a hostage. Aurelian Antoninianus Obv:– IMP AVRELIANVS AVG, Radiate cuirassed bust right Rev:– ADVENTVS AVG, Emperor on rearing horse, riding right, brandishing spear at two enemies beneath the horse, one is prostate with arm raised, the other is kneeling with hands raised. Minted in Rome, 4th emission (Q or inverted Q in exe). Autumn A.D. 273 Reference:– RIC 42 corr. Bust Type F. RIC temp #1648 (16 ex.). LV 163-5 Let's see some more Adventus coins. I know there must be plenty of Hadrian travel coins out there.
I have a couple of Probus coins, they look OK in hand but the photos are not great. I really want a nice Probus wearing his natty uniform. He had a great wardrobe.
He had more different outfits than anyone appearing on coins. Some of the rare ones really bring high prices when they are sold.
