I spotted this Commonwealth shilling at the recent FUN show. This hammer struck coin is usually in low grades. I always have my eye peeled for high grade hammered English coins when they are available. These pictures don't do the coin justice. It has a great deal of luster on the obverse and almost full luster on the reverse. The NGC grade is AU-55. This piece is actually a little better than average.
Nice coins! My example of Commonwealth coinage is a 6 Pence. It's one of the few coins in my collection that I purchased raw. I plan to send it in someday with the other raw coins that I've accumulated, but I'm always scared when that time comes! (I've found that when I succumb to purchasing raw coins.... there's almost always a reason that they were raw in the first place! )
Nice coins. I had planned to do a date run of these but was discouraged by the difficulty of 1657 and 1658, as well as the impossible 1659. Then I got distracted by other things and never got the rest of the easier dates (49,53,54,60). But I have a few examples: 1651/49 1651 Blondeau pattern 1652 1655/4 1656
You can collect die varieties of these coins too. I bought the book by a Maurice Bull at last week's FUN show.
I just figured out that my well circulated Commonwealth Shilling is an overdate, 1562 over 1 and has a stop (period) in “Common * wealth. It’s an “extremely rare” variety, but catch is it has to be Very Fine or better.
